What’s different in Aldie

In Aldie, camera footage is what Loudoun Water asks to see.

In 20105, 93 in 100 homes went up in 2000 or later, and the typical owner’s home dates from 2013, so nearly every Aldie sewer line is PVC, too young to rust or crack. What a camera finds in one usually traces back to the build: trench backfill that settled into a low spot, a joint knocked out of line by heavy equipment, or grout and drywall mud rinsed down a drain before move-in.

Loudoun Water’s rules split the line in two. From your house out to the public main it’s yours to maintain, except the stretch inside the public right of way, where Loudoun Water alone controls the repair. When a plumber finds a defect in that stretch, the utility asks for photographs or a video file, with measurements, showing exactly where it sits, and then repairs its portion. In Aldie the recording is how the utility’s piece gets fixed by the utility.

In Stone Ridge, removing a tree with a trunk over six inches takes the association’s approval, and root intrusion that causes damage is a reason its design standards accept, with photos of the damage. A still from the camera is that photo. Street trees belong to Loudoun County’s required tree canopy, though, so the replacement goes back in at or beside the old one, often over the same line.

Only about 3 in 100 homes in 20105 predate 1980, most of them older than 1960: largely the village houses along Route 50 and farmhouses, since the subdivisions came later. A line that old is often cast iron or clay with roots at the joints, and one from the 1950s or 60s can be Orangeburg, pressed paper soaked in tar, so the camera goes in before any cable does.

What it costs

What a sewer camera inspection costs in Aldie.

Why we’re at the house decides which price you pay. On its own, the line often has to be cleared before the camera can see anything, and that’s what moves the number.

  • Sewer camera inspection, added to a visit$89
  • Sewer camera inspection on its own$500 to $1,700

A locator on the camera head marks the spot and its depth on the ground, so if something needs fixing you know where. If the line is fine, nobody talks about digging.

Comfort+ membership is $199 a year for four visits: a dryer vent cleaning, a water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection, a heating maintenance visit and a cooling maintenance visit.

When it’s worth a look

When to put a camera down the line in Aldie.

Two neighbors back up the same week

Loudoun Water’s rules call for a separate line from each home to the public main, so when several houses on one street back up at once, the trouble is more likely in the utility’s main than under anybody’s lawn.

A newer house nobody has looked under

Plastic pipe doesn’t rust, but the trench it was laid in can settle and leave a sag that holds water and paper. If the line has never had a camera in it, nobody knows.

Water comes up the floor drain

When the washer empties and water rises in the basement floor drain, or a toilet gurgles while a sink runs, the main line isn’t carrying it all away. The camera shows why.

Choosing who runs the camera

How to pick the best plumber for a sewer camera inspection in Aldie.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to put a camera down your line, us included.

  1. Will they measure the footage for Loudoun Water?

If the defect sits under the street, the utility wants footage with measurements. Ask whether the plumber measures from the cleanout, gives you a copy, and will meet Loudoun Water’s representative on site.

  2. Will they show you what the camera finds?

Ask to see it and to keep a copy. “It’s roots” with nothing to show for it is a guess, and a guess is a bad reason to dig up a yard.

  3. Do they line and dig, or only one?

A company that only digs tends to see a dig, and one that only lines tends to see a liner. We do both, so the footage decides, not the truck.

Questions

Sewer camera questions from Aldie.

My Aldie sewer backed up. Who do I call first?

Loudoun Water. Its rules ask you to report a stoppage right away; it checks whether the clog is in its public sewer and clears it if so. If it’s in your own line, you’ll need a licensed plumber, and Loudoun Water suggests one with a power jetter. Ours has one; once the line is open, the camera shows the cause.

Do you work on septic systems in Aldie?

No, SwiftPro does no septic work. Past the village, Loudoun Water says most rural properties are on septic, and the tank is a job for a septic contractor. We can camera the pipe from the house to the tank, to show whether a slow drain is that pipe or the tank.

How much does a sewer camera inspection cost in Aldie?

$89 added to a visit we’re already making, $500 to $1,700 booked on its own. The difference is clearing: a visit just for the camera often has to clear the line first.

Should I get a sewer camera inspection before I buy a house?

If the house is older or has big trees out front, yes. A standard home inspection usually doesn’t include one, and in most of Northern Virginia the line from the house toward the street is the owner’s to fix.

See the line before anybody digs.

Call, or book online and pick a window. You get the price in writing first, and if the camera says the line is fine, that’s what we’ll tell you.
