Why Is My House So Dusty? Start at the Floor Register

Why is my house so dusty, even right after I clean? Often it's the ductwork. Dust that gathers on floor registers and returns is riding in from the ducts, and the system blows it back out each cycle.

What you’re seeing in this video

Aaron, our duct cleaning technician, in a headlamp and respirator, kneels at a return in a living room, right beside a bookshelf. The return is the larger grille that pulls air back to the system. He feeds a red vacuum hose into the duct opening so the loose dust gets pulled out instead of stirred into the room.

Then the camera drops to a floor register, the supply grille where heated or cooled air comes out. Its louvers are caked gray. That's dust around air vents in its most obvious form, and it hints at what's sitting further down the duct.

Why it matters in your house

  • Dusty vents usually mean dust inside the ducts too. Lift one floor register and shine a flashlight down the boot. If it's coated, wiping the furniture won't keep up.
  • Shelves and furniture near a return catch what it doesn't pull in. Heavy dust on the shelf closest to a return is a clue worth noticing.
  • Air duct cleaning removes what's settled in the runs, and a filter changed on schedule keeps less from collecting afterward.

Can dirty air ducts make my house dusty?

They can. Your system moves the air in your house through the ducts many times a day, so whatever's settled in there gets picked up and dropped back on your furniture. Change the filter first. If the dust still comes back fast and the registers look gray, have the ducts looked at.
