Return Air Vent vs Supply Vent: Which One Pulls Air In
A return air vent pulls room air back to your system to be heated or cooled, and a supply vent blows that air out. Returns are usually the bigger grilles, and they collect the most dust.

What you’re seeing in this video
Aaron, our duct cleaning technician, reaches up in a headlamp and white N95 and drops a ceiling return grille out of the ceiling. Behind it, the return duct is lined with gray dust. Then a wall return opening, grille already off, shows the same buildup on the metal edges.
Returns are where air goes in, so they're the first thing to catch the dust, hair and lint floating around the house. Supply registers, the smaller louvered grilles on floors or ceilings, push air out and stay cleaner longer.
The difference between supply and return vents is easy to test: hold a tissue up to one with the fan running. If it sucks the tissue flat, it's a return.
Why it matters in your house
- Don't park a couch or bed against a return. Starve it of air and the system runs longer to move the same amount, which costs you comfort and wear.
- Closing supply registers in unused rooms doesn't save what people think. It raises pressure in the ducts and can make other rooms less comfortable.
- If your return grille is gray, the duct behind it probably is too. That's where air duct cleaning starts.
Is a return air vent supposed to blow air?
No. A return should pull air in, never push it out. If a grille you thought was a return is blowing, it's really a supply, or something in the ductwork is wrong, like a disconnected run or a damper set the wrong way. Hold a tissue to it with the fan on, then have a tech look if it blows.
