What HVAC Techs Think on a Service Call, and a Clogged Humidifier Pad
What HVAC techs think on a service call is mostly a hope for an easy fix. This one gets it: a whole-house humidifier pad on the furnace, dirty and overdue for a swap.

What you’re seeing in this video
A smiling tech in glasses, a goatee, a black-and-green cap and a black SwiftPro quarter-zip carries a red toolbox down a neighborhood sidewalk toward the house.
In the basement, he holds up a humidifier pad he just pulled off the furnace, grimy from a season of use, next to a new one still in its package.
A whole-house humidifier mounts on the furnace ductwork. Water trickles over that pad while warm air passes through it, adding moisture to the house in winter. Hard water leaves minerals behind, and once the pad clogs, the humidifier barely works.
Why it matters in your house
- Swap the humidifier pad once a year, ideally at the start of heating season. Hard water can clog it sooner.
- Static shocks, dry skin, gaps opening in wood floors and indoor humidity under 30 percent in January can all mean the humidifier isn't doing its job.
- Check the humidifier's bypass damper too. Many have a summer and winter setting, and it should be open during heating season.
How often should a furnace humidifier pad be replaced?
Once a year for most homes, usually in the fall before the heat starts running every day. With hard water or heavy use, check it midwinter too. If the pad is stiff, white with scale or brown, it can't hold water anymore and the humidifier is pushing air through a rock.
