Positive Attitude at Work: Bad Days, a Gas Furnace and a Filter Check

A positive attitude at work shows up here as a tech yelling that he eats bad days for breakfast. Then two techs get to a gas furnace, and one of the first things checked is the filter slot.

What you’re seeing in this video

A tech with a goatee, a headlamp strapped over a black cap, a black polo and olive pants hams it up for the camera in a basement.

Then the real work: two techs at a gas furnace on a tile floor, a tool bag open beside them. One holds gauge hoses at the unit while the other checks the filter slot.

The filter matters more than it looks. A clogged one starves the furnace of air, the heat exchanger runs hot, and the high limit switch shuts the burners off. Plenty of no-heat calls end right there.

Why it matters in your house

  • Look at your filter monthly in heating season and change it when it's grey. One-inch filters often need changing every one to three months.
  • Make sure the filter's airflow arrow points toward the furnace. Backwards filters restrict air and can collapse into the blower.
  • If the furnace starts, runs a few minutes and shuts off on repeat, try a new filter first. If it keeps doing it, the limit switch is telling a tech something.

Can a dirty filter make a furnace shut off?

Yes. A clogged filter chokes airflow, so heat builds up inside the furnace until the high limit switch cuts the burners as a safety step. The blower keeps running, the house cools, and the cycle repeats. A fresh filter fixes it more often than people expect, but repeated trips need a tech.
