Signs Your Air Ducts Need Cleaning, From the Boot to the Run

Three signs your air ducts need cleaning: dust you can see at the registers, a house that's dusty soon after you clean, and weak airflow from vents that used to blow hard. This clip shows the first one four ways.

What you’re seeing in this video

No people in this one, just the evidence. A duct boot, the metal box a register sits in, is caked gray. A floor register is clogged so badly its slots are half closed. A wall return opening has debris hanging off its edges.

The last shot looks down the inside of a round duct, the pipe that carries air from the main trunk out to one room. Its walls are coated. That's the part you can't see from the grille, and it's the part air duct cleaning is really for.

Why it matters in your house

  • Pull one floor register and look down. A clean boot is bare metal. A gray, fuzzy one like this means the runs behind it are holding dust too.
  • Weak airflow from vents in one or two rooms can be buildup, a crushed flex run or a closed damper. A tech checks all three before blaming dirt.
  • If you dust and it's back in a day or two, your system is likely spreading it. Change the filter first, and if nothing changes, look at the ducts.

What are the signs you need air duct cleaning?

Gray buildup on register louvers, dark streaks on the ceiling around grilles, a house that gets dusty right after cleaning, and rooms where the airflow feels weak. A dusty smell when the system first kicks on is another. Any one alone could be the filter. Two or three together usually means the ducts.
