Air Duct Cleaning Process: A Ceiling Return, Then the Outside Wall
The air duct cleaning process starts with the grilles, which come off so the ducts can be reached and the covers cleaned. This clip opens on a ceiling return grille coming down, then moves outside to the brick wall.

What you’re seeing in this video
Inside, Aaron, our duct cleaning technician, wears a headlamp and N95 mask as he reaches up in a hallway and pulls a ceiling return grille down and out. Returns are the big grilles that pull air back to the system, so they're usually where the heaviest dust sits.
Outside, Aaron works with a drill at a vent on the brick exterior wall. The ground under it is covered in lint, and a black hose runs along the foundation. Lint piled under an outside wall vent usually points to a dryer, and dryer vent cleaning is its own service, separate from air duct cleaning.
Why it matters in your house
- Ask how a company cleans returns, not just supplies. Returns hold the most dust, and skipping them leaves the dirtiest part of the system untouched.
- Lint on the ground or siding under your dryer's outside exhaust means it's escaping or backing up. A clogged dryer line is a fire risk, so book dryer vent cleaning soon.
- Grilles come off and go back on. If yours are painted over or stuck, mention it when you book so the tech plans for it.
What is the air duct cleaning process?
Registers and grilles come off first. The ducts are put under strong vacuum, then each run is agitated with brushes, air whips or a blower so stuck dust breaks loose and gets pulled out. Returns, supplies and the trunk all get done. Grilles are cleaned and reinstalled, and we show you photos of the ducts after, where the camera can get a clear shot.
