AC Can't Keep Up, or Is It Just You? A Quick Way to Tell

If your AC holds the house near 75 degrees on a 95-degree afternoon, it's keeping up. The joke here is the one person in a blanket under the vent while everyone else swears it's hot.

What you’re seeing in this video

No tools in this one. Someone wrapped in a gray patterned blanket sits on the couch right under a ceiling air vent, with the on-screen line that the AC isn't broken, you're just cold.

Every family with one always-freezing member will recognize it. The vent overhead is a supply register, the outlet where cooled air enters the room, and sitting directly under one is the coldest seat in the house. The question underneath is a fair one: how do you know when an AC can't keep up for real?

Why it matters in your house

  • A real sign your AC can't keep up: it runs all afternoon and the thermostat still drifts up a degree or two an hour on a day in the low 90s.
  • Hold your hand at a supply register. If the air feels cool but not cold, or barely moves, the system needs a check before the next heat wave.
  • One warm upstairs room and one freezing person downstairs usually points to airflow and duct balance, not a dying AC.

Why can't my AC keep up on hot days?

Some nonstop running on the hottest afternoons is normal, since most systems here are sized for about 93 degrees outside. Past that, a dirty outdoor coil, a clogged filter, low refrigerant or a weak capacitor are the usual culprits. If it can't hold 75 on a typical summer day, have a tech check the charge and the temperature drop across the coil.
