Air Handler Replacement After Dark: Three Techs, a Tight Fit

What you’re seeing in this video
It's dark outside and tight inside. A gloved hand rests on the old foil-wrapped ductwork, then three techs in black hoodies guide the new air handler down into its spot, working around each other in a space barely wider than the cabinet.
The finish shot shows the new unit in place with a fresh white PVC condensate trap on the drain. The air handler is the indoor cabinet with the blower and the cooling coil. The trap is the U-bend that lets water drain out without the blower pulling air back up the pipe.
Why it matters in your house
- A missing or dried-out condensate trap can stop the drain from flowing, so water backs up into the pan. On an attic or closet unit, that ends up in a ceiling.
- If airflow from your vents has gone weak and a new filter didn't fix it, the blower motor or a dirty coil inside the air handler is the next place to look.
- Air handlers in tight closets and attics are why access matters at install. Ask how the new one will be serviced, not just how it'll fit.
When should an air handler be replaced?
Usually alongside the outdoor unit, so the coil and condenser match and the system reaches its rated efficiency. On its own, replace it when the cabinet or drain pan is rusting through, the coil leaks or the blower keeps failing. Most last around 15 years, give or take, depending on how faithfully the filter got changed.
