Aldie’s air conditioners are young, and Stone Ridge lets you swap one in place.
Across all of 20105 more than nine in ten homes went up after 2000, so the cooling here is young by Northern Virginia standards. Young isn’t one age, though. Stone Ridge’s median owner home was built in 2009; the ZIP’s as a whole, in 2013, so the streets outside Stone Ridge run newer still. A 2009 condenser is well into its second decade. One from the late 2010s may still be inside the manufacturer’s parts coverage, so dig out the model and serial number before you pay for a part.
That gap lands right on the refrigerant change. The switch from R-22 to R-410A came at the start of 2010, and half of Stone Ridge’s owner homes date from 2009 or earlier, so two houses on one street can run two different refrigerants. The label plate on the condenser’s side panel settles it. On R-410A a leak is usually a repair; on R-22 it’s a decision, because the refrigerant itself is no longer produced.
More than half the homes in Stone Ridge are townhouses, each condenser on its own pad behind the unit. If one has to be replaced, Stone Ridge’s design standards, in force since March 2025, keep it simple: an existing approved air conditioner or heat pump can be replaced without an application. A new unit, a second one or a move to a different spot needs an approved application before it goes in.
Stone Ridge’s condo communities, Amber Springs, Centre Park, Mercer Park, Stone Mill Corner, Stone Springs and Summerwalk, are the other kind of call. Each has its own management company, so the first question is whose system it is: the owner’s, a tenant’s to report, or the condo association’s. And in the old village around Aldie Mill, the county historic district reviews most exterior changes before the work starts. A repair changes nothing outside, so it doesn’t come into it; a new condenser in a new spot can.

- Gas heat means a furnace inside and a separate air conditioner outside, sharing one blower, so a tired blower shows up in both seasons.
- The typical owner’s house here went up in 2013. A system installed since 2010 doesn’t run R-22, so its refrigerant is still made and a leak is a repair to price.

What a failing AC in Aldie usually does.
It’s the original system
A house from the 2000s often still has its first air conditioner. Anything installed before 2010 usually runs R-22, which hasn’t been made since 2020, so a leak on one is a repair-or-replace question.
The air coming out is warm
Usually the outdoor unit has stopped running. A hum with no fan turning is almost always the run capacitor; silence while the thermostat calls is usually the contactor.
It runs all day and never cools
That’s an airflow problem far more often than a refrigerant problem: a clogged filter, a matted coil, or a blower wheel packed with dust.
How to pick the best AC repair company in Aldie.
Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.
If the condenser has to move, do they know Stone Ridge wants an application first?
A same-spot swap needs nothing from the association. A new pad, an added unit or a relocation needs its approval before the install, and a contractor who works in Aldie should raise that while you’re still deciding, not once the truck is unloaded.
Do they publish prices?
A company that prints what a capacitor or a contactor costs has already told you the number. One that won’t say until the tech is in your driveway hasn’t.
Do they measure before they sell refrigerant?
A healthy system drops the air somewhere around 16 to 22 degrees across the indoor coil. Low refrigerant means a leak, and topping it up every summer is the expensive way to find that out.
Will they tell you when it’s the end of the road?
Some repairs aren’t worth doing on a 20-year-old system. The good answer shows you the repair price and the replacement price side by side and lets you pick.

AC repair questions from Aldie.
Do I need HOA approval to replace my AC in Stone Ridge?
Not for a straight replacement. Stone Ridge’s Design and Maintenance Standards let you replace an existing approved air conditioner or heat pump without an application. Adding one, or moving it to a new spot, needs an approved application first. A repair needs neither.
My Aldie AC is only a few years old. Why did it quit?
On a young system it’s rarely the big parts. Check the filter and the breaker first. If the air handler sits in an attic or a closet, a float switch on the condensate line shuts the whole system off when that drain backs up, to keep water off the ceiling below; clearing the drain runs $175 to $420. A run capacitor can also give out early, and that’s $240 to $370.
Do you fix heat pumps in Aldie?
Yes. About one Aldie owner home in seven heats with electricity, and electric heat in a house this new is typically a heat pump. It works all winter as well, so a July visit includes the defrost board and the reversing valve along with whatever brought us out. In a Stone Ridge condo, tell us the building, since the association may control access to the outdoor units.
How much does AC repair cost in Aldie?
The diagnostic visit is $99. The common repairs: a run capacitor $240 to $370, a contactor $290 to $425, a condensate drain cleared $175 to $420, refrigerant topped up $190 to $740. A refrigerant leak repair runs $1,850 to $2,700.
Should I repair it or replace it?
Fix the cheap parts on almost anything. Think twice about a big repair on a system over 15 years old, and about any leak on an R-22 system. The HVAC estimator prices a new system in about a minute, so you can put the two numbers side by side.
