What’s different in Aldie

Most Aldie furnaces burn gas and came with the house they heat.

Gas heats close to eight in ten owner homes in Aldie, and Stone Ridge’s association lists Washington Gas as the gas company. Since more than nine in ten homes here went up after 2000, the furnace on a call is usually the one that came with the house: about seventeen years old in a Stone Ridge house from the 2009 median, and younger in plenty of the streets around it, where the ZIP’s 2013 median puts many furnaces near a dozen years.

Those ages call for different conversations. On a furnace from the late 2010s nearly any repair is worth making, because the cabinet, the heat exchanger and the ductwork around it have most of their life left. At seventeen, a Stone Ridge furnace still deserves its small fixes, but before a blower motor or a circuit board goes in, the replacement number belongs on the same page.

The association’s utility list carries two electric companies, Dominion Energy and NOVEC, and that matters if you’re weighing a heat pump with the gas furnace as backup. Which one bills you moves the outdoor temperature where gas becomes the cheaper heat; our dual fuel guide works it out for both, along with what Washington Gas pays toward one. The federal tax credit ended with 2025, so the utility’s money is what’s left.

Changing a furnace can change the outside of the house, and two sets of rules watch that here. In Stone Ridge, a flue replaced exactly as it was needs no application, a new or changed one does, and a through-the-wall metal flue can’t go on a side you see from the street. In the old village along Route 50, the county’s historic district reviews most exterior changes before the work begins. A repair inside the cabinet touches neither.

By the numbers

Aldie houses, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey. Median year built and heat count owner-occupied homes only.

  • Median home built2013 Census
  • Built before 1980hardly any Census
  • Built since 2000about 9 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 8 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 1 in 10 Census
  • Most heat here is a gas furnace, so most calls come down to the flame sensor, the igniter, the inducer motor or a pressure switch.
  • The typical owner’s house here went up in 2013, so plenty of furnaces are still the originals and young enough to be worth repairing.

What you’d notice

What a failing furnace in Aldie usually does.

The heat pump lives on its backup strips

In an Aldie home heated with electricity, a heat pump that leans on its electric strips through every cold snap shows up as a winter bill that jumps and air that never feels warm. That’s usually a defrost or refrigerant fault, and cheaper to chase in November than in February.

It lights, then shuts off

The burners fire and go out a few seconds later, over and over. That’s usually a dirty flame sensor, and cleaning it takes about ten minutes.

It won’t light at all

No glow, no flame. A cracked igniter is the usual part, and on a high-efficiency furnace a clogged condensate line can stop it cold too.

Safety and paperwork

What the county says about your heat in Aldie.

Loudoun County

Loudoun County Fire and Rescue says to have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional, and to keep anything that can burn at least three feet from all heating equipment. Source.

In its fall clock-change reminder, Loudoun County’s fire and rescue system tells residents to check their carbon monoxide alarms, and recommends one outside each sleeping area and on each level of the home, tested monthly. Source.

Choosing who fixes it

How to pick the best furnace repair company in Aldie.

Questions worth asking anybody who comes out, us included.

  1. Will they read the date on the furnace before quoting a big part?

The rating plate inside the door gives the year. On a furnace that came with a 2009 house, that date changes what a big repair is worth, and a tech should read it to you before quoting one.

  2. Will they price the part before they fix it?

Flame sensors, igniters and control boards all have a going rate. A tech who can’t tell you the number before starting is asking you to find out afterwards.

  3. Do they look at the venting, not just the flame?

Getting the burners lit is half a heating call. Ask whether they check the flue and test for carbon monoxide while the panel’s open.

  4. Do they know when a repair isn’t worth it?

A big repair on a furnace past 15 or 20 years deserves a replacement price next to it. A good tech puts both numbers in front of you and lets you choose.

Questions

Heating repair questions from Aldie.

Why does my furnace quit after a snowstorm?

If it’s a high-efficiency furnace, check where its two plastic pipes leave the house. Snow over the intake or the exhaust trips the pressure switch, and the furnace stops to be safe. Clear them by hand, reset the thermostat and call if it won’t relight. A condensate line that froze in a garage-level install does the same thing.

Does Loudoun County want a permit for a new gas furnace?

Yes, even like for like. Since October 2025 Loudoun has asked for no plans on a replacement at the same BTUs in the same spot, so a straight swap is the permit alone. In Stone Ridge the association only comes into it if the flue changes.

Is a heat pump common in Aldie?

Less than most places we work. About one Aldie owner home in seven heats with electricity, and about one in twenty burns propane, most of it outside Stone Ridge. If yours is a heat pump, a short blast of cool air on a January morning is the defrost cycle doing its job; the backup strips running nonstop aren’t, and your power bill is where it shows.

How much does furnace repair cost in Aldie?

The diagnostic visit is $99. A flame sensor cleaned is $95 to $180; an igniter or flame sensor replaced, $240 to $410; a control board, $550 to $1,180; a blower motor, $670 to $2,400.

Should I repair it or replace it?

Fix the small parts on almost anything. Before a big repair on an old furnace, look at the replacement number: a furnace alone, keeping the air conditioner you have, runs $4,285 to $14,040 installed, and the HVAC estimator gives your number in about a minute.
