Prince William has two rules nobody warns you about.
The annual test itself is the same as everywhere in Virginia: a certified tester, a calibrated gauge, a report. Prince William County adds an irrigation-device rule in its code, and the City of Manassas adds a maintenance cycle. Both are easy once you know they exist.
Antifreeze means RPZ
Prince William County code allows a PVB or an RPZ on a lawn irrigation system, but if your irrigation company winterizes with antifreeze instead of compressed air, an RPZ is the only approved device. A PVB plus antifreeze is a code problem hiding in plain sight.

Yes. The City of Manassas requires an annual minimum test on every testable device, approves irrigation plans before installation, and requires device internals to be overhauled on a 5-year cycle.
Is Dale City on Prince William Water?
Yes. Dale City, Woodbridge, and Lake Ridge homeowners get their backflow notices from Prince William Water. We test, repair, and handle the paperwork for all three.
How long does the test take?
About 30 minutes per device. Your water is off for a few of those minutes while the gauge readings are taken, and that’s the whole disruption.
Who is allowed to do the test?
Virginia is strict about this. Since January 1, 2023, the state only accepts tests performed by a certified Backflow Prevention Device Worker, a DPOR tradesman certification, and some counties add their own registration rules on top. A test that doesn’t meet those rules is void and has to be redone.
What if the device fails?
Most failures are rebuildable: worn check springs, debris in a seat, or a body cracked by a hard freeze. We quote the fix before we start, repair or replace it, retest, and handle the paperwork.
What does it cost?
