Dirty Outdoor AC Unit: Take a Look at Yours Right Now

Go look at your outdoor AC. If the coil fins look matted, plants crowd it, or a fence sits within a foot or two, it's working harder than it should, and this is your sign to book a tune-up.

What you’re seeing in this video

A blue-gloved hand scrubs an outdoor AC coil with a yellow brush, and the dirt comes off in a thick mat. A wooden fence stands right beside the unit.

The on-screen question is a fair one: be honest, how bad does your outdoor AC look right now? It's set to a comedy bit about inspecting a car that's not perfect, which is the right spirit for this, because nobody's unit is.

Why it matters in your house

  • Clearance matters as much as cleanliness. Most outdoor units want a foot or two of open space on every side and plenty above, so a fence, shrubs or a deck rail this close starves it of air.
  • Mowing toward the unit sprays clippings into the coil. Point the mower discharge away, and trim back anything growing within reach of the cabinet.
  • If the coil looks this bad from the yard, the inside of the unit is usually worse. That calls for a tune-up with the top off, not a quick spray.

How much space does an outdoor AC unit need around it?

Check the label or install manual, but a foot or two on every side is common, with about five feet clear above so the fan can throw hot air up and away. Fences, hedges and stored items closer than that make the unit breathe its own hot air, which raises pressure and power use.
