HVAC Troubleshooting: Three Checks to Try Before You Call

Before you call for HVAC repair, check the thermostat batteries, make sure the floor vents are open, and turn the equipment off and back on. If none of that brings it back, it's time for a tech.

What you’re seeing in this video

A SwiftPro team member in a white plaid blouse stands at the tailgate of a SwiftPro-wrapped pickup in the office parking lot and walks through what she'd tell a caller first.

Step one is the thermostat: if it's blank or not responding, try fresh batteries, or give it a shake like an old remote. Step two is airflow: look at the floor registers and make sure the little wheel on the side, the damper, is open so air can pass through. Step three is the equipment itself, the furnace, heat pump or AC, turned off and back on. If all three fail, she says, call.

What they say on camera

First and foremost, we always say check your thermostat. If it's not turning on, check the batteries. Maybe they're old. Maybe they just need a good little shake like with your retro remote.

Um, second, check your ducks. See if they are open. Those uh grates on your floor, that little spinny wheel on the side, make sure that it's open, flowing air or air can pass through. Um, if all those if those two things fail, check your heat pump, AC, furnace, whatever the unit may be.

Turn it on, turn it off. if you know the good golden rule for everything. Um, and if all that fails, give us a call and we'd be happy to help.

Why it matters in your house

  • A dead thermostat battery can look exactly like a dead furnace. Swapping batteries takes a minute and can save you a service call.
  • Closed registers in a few rooms do more than leave those rooms cold. Too many closed vents can choke airflow and freeze a coil or overheat a furnace.
  • Reset a tripped breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call, because a breaker that keeps tripping is protecting you from something.

What should I check before calling an HVAC technician?

Thermostat first: batteries, the right mode, and a setting a few degrees past room temperature. Then the air filter and the registers, open and unblocked. Then the breaker and the service switch near the furnace, which looks like a light switch. If the system still won't run, or a breaker trips twice, call it in.
