Just Keep Servicing: The Filter Pull That Shows Why Maintenance Matters

Just keep servicing, the clip says, borrowing a cartoon fish's motto. The proof is in one shot: a tech sliding a dust-clogged pleated media filter out of a furnace in a laundry room on a new-build street.

What you’re seeing in this video

Two techs walk away from a SwiftPro-wrapped truck down a street of newly built homes. Inside one, a tech in a SwiftPro cap pulls a pleated media filter out of the furnace in a laundry room and holds it up. It's dark with dust.

A second tech in a gray hoodie reaches into the return side of the cabinet. The soundtrack is a famous animated fish urging everyone to keep swimming, swapped here for keep servicing.

Why it matters in your house

  • New homes load filters fast. Drywall dust and construction debris get pulled into the return for the first year or so, so check that filter more often than the label suggests.
  • A media filter is the thick pleated kind, several inches deep, in a slot by the furnace. Most last six months to a year, but a dirty one should come out sooner.
  • A clogged filter makes the blower work harder and can freeze the AC coil in summer. It's the cheapest fix in HVAC and the easiest to forget.

How often should a furnace media filter be changed?

Most four or five inch media filters last six to twelve months in a typical house. New construction, pets, renovation dust or allergies shorten that. Pull it out and look: if the pleats are gray and you can't see light through it, change it. A tech checks it at every maintenance visit too.
