Private Equity HVAC or Local? Tyler Griffin on Why It Matters

What you’re seeing in this video

Tyler Griffin, SwiftPro's owner, talks to camera outside the SwiftPro office door in a black polo. He's speaking to homeowners about to review a proposal for an AC replacement, a water heater or another major project, and answers the question of why SwiftPro.

Cutaways show the people behind the answer: eight SwiftPro crew members lined up in front of three wrapped vans loaded with drain and jetting machines, and a Trane-badged SwiftPro truck in the lot. HVAC and plumbing, both in the shot.

His points: SwiftPro is not a corporation and not private equity. He and most of the people who work there live in Northern Virginia, and their kids go to school here. And when something breaks at a bad hour, a person answers the phone or calls you right back.

What they say on camera

Hi, Tyler Griffin here, owner at SwiftPro Heating, Cooling, and Plumbing. You're probably watching this video because you're about to go through a proposal with some quotes for different options for your home, maybe replacing your AC, replacing a water heater, or some other major project. Why SwiftPro? We're a local, family-owned brand.

What does that mean? It means we're not a corporation, we're not private equity. We live here, work here. My kids go to school here, the same for most of the people that work for our company.

We like to say neighbors helping neighbors. We believe that Northern Virginia is an awesome place to live, and we want to help our neighbors take care of their homes and live healthier, happier lives, because who's happy when the air conditioning breaks, right? But also, we recognize things happen at the worst times, and we're going to be here when you need us as well, 24/7 365. Either a human being answers the phone or calls you right back.

We hope that we can partner with you on this project and have the privilege of taking care of you and your family at this time.

Why it matters in your house

  • When you compare quotes, ask whether the tech is an employee or a subcontractor, and whether you'll see the diagnosis and price before work starts. The answers tell you more than the logo.
  • A company with HVAC and plumbing under one roof can tell a condensate leak from a plumbing leak on one visit, instead of two contractors pointing at each other.
  • Ownership decides who answers for the work later. A local owner whose neighbors are the customers has a long-term reason to make it right.

Does it matter if an HVAC company is owned by private equity?

It can. Private equity owners usually plan to sell within a few years, which can push sales targets onto techs and change who you deal with after the install. A local, family-owned company has nobody to sell to. Ask who owns the company, who does the work, and who you call if something goes wrong in year three.
