Goodman furnace codes come in two kinds. Newer Goodman and Amana furnaces show letters on a small display, like EE2. Older ones blink a red light a set number of times. Here’s the catch Goodman’s own manuals make plain: the same number of blinks can mean different things on two different Goodman boards, so match the table to your furnace. A repair starts with our $99 diagnostic, and most furnace fixes are $95 to $180 for a flame sensor cleaning up to $550 to $1,180 for a control board.
Our Goodman repair page has what each repair costs and what we’d put in if it’s done.
Newer Goodman and Amana furnaces with a display
| Code | What it means | What it usually takes |
|---|---|---|
| EE0 | Locked out after 3 failed tries to light | Gas supply, igniter or flame sensor |
| EE1 | Pressure switch closed at the start of the cycle | The switch or its hose |
| EE2 | Pressure switch didn’t close | A blocked vent or intake pipe, a blocked drain, or a weak inducer |
| EE3 | Primary limit open | Airflow: the filter, the blower, a closed vent |
| EE4 | Flame sensed with no call for heat | Call |
| EE5 | Open fuse | A short in the low voltage wiring |
| EE6 | Weak flame signal | A flame sensor that’s coated or oxidized: a cleaning |
| EEL | Igniter circuit fault | The igniter or its connection |
| EEA | 115 volt polarity reversed | A wiring fix |
| E11 | Rollout switch open | Call: rollout needs a look at the burners and venting |
| EAL | R-32 refrigerant sensor detected a leak | The furnace stops heating and only runs the fan: a leak to find |
From Goodman’s single-stage furnace service manual. To see stored faults, press the left or right button until L 6 F shows.
Older Goodman furnaces: counting the red flashes
| Flashes | What it means |
|---|---|
| Steady on | Normal operation |
| 1 | Locked out after 3 tries: no flame |
| 2 | Pressure switch closed when it shouldn’t be |
| 3 | Pressure switch didn’t close: blocked flue or intake, blocked drain, weak inducer |
| 4 | Primary or auxiliary limit open |
| 5 | Flame sensed with no call for heat |
| 6 | Rollout limit open |
| 7 | Low flame sense signal |
| Rapid | Reversed polarity |
From Goodman’s GMSS9 service manual. On the older two-stage GMEC96, one red flash means something else entirely (flame sensed when it shouldn’t be), which is why the model number matters.
Before you reset it, write the code down
Goodman’s older boards reset a lockout on their own after an hour, and cutting the power erases the blink code. So the code your tech needs is gone the moment someone flips the switch to “see if that fixes it.” Take a phone video of the light first.
Three flashes or EE2: the pressure switch
The most searched Goodman code is the pressure switch that won’t close. The switch is usually reporting a problem, not causing one. On a 90% furnace, Goodman tells techs to check the pressure switch hose for water and make sure the drain trap is primed and clear, and Goodman says the drain tubes should be checked every year. Clearing a clogged condensate drain, with a trap and a float switch added, is $175 to $420.
Four flashes or EE3: the limit
The furnace got too hot and shut itself off. Start with the filter. Then the blower wheel: a wheel packed with dust moves a fraction of the air it should, and cleaning it is $300 to $440. A limit that keeps tripping on a clean filter needs a look at the blower motor and the ducts.
Goodman furnace code questions people ask us
Why is my Goodman furnace flashing red 3 times?
On an older single-stage Goodman, three flashes means the pressure switch didn’t close: usually a blocked vent or intake, a clogged condensate drain, or a weak inducer motor. The diagnostic is $99.
What does a solid red light mean on a Goodman furnace?
On the older single-stage boards, a steady light is normal operation. A light that’s off entirely means no power to the board: check the breaker and the furnace switch.
What does EE6 mean on a Goodman furnace?
A weak flame signal. Goodman says a nearly invisible coating on the flame sensor can cause it; a cleaning is $95 to $180.
Should I replace my Goodman furnace?
Not over a code. Most of these are parts. If the heat exchanger has failed or the furnace is past about 15 years and needs a big repair, a new furnace is $4,285 to $14,040 installed. From about $71 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. See the Goodman page.
