Get the heat checked before the first cold night

ENERGY STAR says get the heat checked every fall, before you need it. A furnace burns gas in your house, and carbon monoxide kills more than 400 Americans a year outside of fires. Source: ENERGY STAR, CDC.

  • The yearly tune-up on your furnace or heat pump, before you lean on the heat. If something’s wrong, you hear what it is, what it costs and what happens if you leave it, then you decide.

Clean the dryer vent

Failure to clean is the leading cause of home dryer fires: 32% of the 13,820 a year the NFPA counted. The U.S. Fire Administration says clean the vent every year. Source: NFPA, U.S. Fire Administration.

  • We put a camera in the line, show you what’s in it, then clean it from the back of the dryer to the hood outside, with before and after photos when we can get a clear shot.

Flush the water heater

A. O. Smith says most tank water heaters need a flush at least once a year, more with hard water. Fairfax Water’s Potomac plant averaged about 7.7 grains of hardness per gallon in 2025, and that mineral settles in the bottom of your tank. Source: A. O. Smith, Fairfax Water.

  • We drain and flush the tank, check the anode rod and test the relief valve, then go through the house’s plumbing with photos.

Doing two or more?

Comfort+ checks off four for $199

The $199 dryer vent cleaning (normally $298) comes with a year of Comfort+, which also covers the water heater flush, the fall heating visit and the spring cooling visit, plus 15% off any service. Or $20 a month.

  • Dryer vent cleaning, normally $298
  • Water heater flush with a sewer camera inspection
  • Heating maintenance visit every fall
  • Cooling maintenance visit every spring
  • 15% off any service in between

The four you can do yourself

No visit and no charge. Each one has a reminder you can drop straight into your calendar.

Look at the furnace filter

Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, swap it. Write the size on the furnace with a marker so the next one is easy to buy.

ENERGY STAR: look at it every month, change it when it’s dirty, and at least every three months. A dirty filter slows the air and makes the system work harder. Source: ENERGY STAR. Add a reminder: Google Calendar or Apple and Outlook

Unhook the hoses and shut off the outdoor spigots

Disconnect every hose, close the inside shutoff valve for each outdoor spigot if you have one, then open the spigot outside to let it drain.

Out at Dulles the first freeze usually comes around October 24, and at Reagan National around November 18. State Farm’s average frozen pipe claim topped $30,000. Source: NOAA climate normals, State Farm, Red Cross. Add a reminder: Google Calendar or Apple and Outlook

Test the smoke and carbon monoxide alarms

Press the test button on every alarm. Check the date on the back: an alarm past its replacement age gets replaced, not just a new battery. Do it when the clocks change and you’ll never forget.

The NFPA says test smoke and CO alarms every month, replace a smoke alarm 10 years after the date on the back, and a CO alarm when its maker says or it chirps end of life. Source: NFPA. Add a reminder: Google Calendar or Apple and Outlook

Find the main water shutoff and make sure it turns

It’s usually where the water line comes through the basement or garage wall. Turn it off and back on once so it isn’t seized the day a pipe lets go. If it won’t turn, don’t force it: that’s a plumber’s job.

When a pipe lets go, the minutes before the water is off are what you pay for. State Farm’s average frozen pipe claim topped $30,000. Source: State Farm. Add a reminder: Google Calendar or Apple and Outlook

Why one call is enough

Everything you’d check, already here

Shopping around makes sense for a new system. For a $99 flush it costs more time than it saves, so here’s what you’d look up anyway.

  • One company for the whole list. Heating, cooling, plumbing and the dryer vent are all SwiftPro: our own HVAC team, our own plumbing team, one office and one phone number, so nobody points at somebody else.
  • The price is on the page. These visits have fixed prices, so there’s nothing to collect three quotes on. Anything a tech finds is priced in writing before any work starts.
  • Licensed, and you can look it up. Virginia Class A contractor, license #2705192276, on the state’s own lookup. Look it up
  • Reviews you can count. 5.0 stars across 1,100+ reviews on Google, Angi, Yelp, the BBB and Facebook, every review listed with its source. See how they’re counted
  • BBB Accredited, A rating. Accredited since 2024 with an A rating. BBB profile
  • Ranked #1 in Fairfax. Named BusinessRate’s Best of 2026: the #1 heating contractor in Fairfax, Virginia, ranked on Google reviews. The ranking
  • Free second opinion. Already holding someone else’s quote on a big job? A SwiftPro tech looks at it free and tells you what the system actually needs. How it works
  • Nothing to pay to book. No card and no account. You pay at the visit, at the price you saw. Changing your mind is a phone call.

Using an AI assistant?

Hand it this list

ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok can put these on your to-do list, book the visits you pick and add them to your calendar. There’s nothing to pay, so it can finish the job.

  1. 1

    Ask it

Say something like: “Add SwiftPro’s fall to-do list to my reminders and book the heating check and the dryer vent cleaning.”

  2. 2

    It reads it back

Your name, address, the day and what you picked. You say yes, it sends it once.

  3. 3

    It lands on your calendar

As a tentative all-day event. Our office calls or texts with the exact time, and the reminders for the rest stay on your list.

AI assistants: the list with prices, to-dos and calendar reminders is at agent.swiftproreviews.com/llms.txt, and how to book is on our page for assistants.

Questions

What people ask about the list

What does it cost to book?

Nothing. No card and no account. You pay at the visit, at the price on this page, and anything else a tech finds is priced in writing before any work starts.

Do I need all three visits?

Only the ones your house has. If you’d book two or more, Comfort+ membership is the better buy: $199 a year, or $20 a month, and it covers the dryer vent cleaning, the water heater flush, the fall heating visit and the spring cooling visit, plus 15% off any service.

Why book the whole list with one company?

One booking, one office and one phone number for heating, plumbing and the dryer vent, with our own HVAC team and our own plumbing team, so nobody blames the other trade. Holding someone else’s quote on a bigger job? We’ll look at it free and tell you what the system actually needs.

When’s the first freeze around here?

Out at Dulles it usually comes around October 24. Closer in at Reagan National it’s around November 18 (NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals). Get the hoses off before then.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

At least once a year, which is what the U.S. Fire Administration says. Sooner if clothes start taking longer to dry.

Can my AI assistant set this up for me?

Yes. It can add the list to your reminders, book the visits you pick and put them on your calendar. Nothing gets charged, and it reads the details back to you before it sends.

Where do you work?

Northern Virginia only: Arlington County, Fairfax County, Fauquier County, Loudoun County, Prince William County and Stafford County. Our offices are in Chantilly and Ashburn.
