Why get a second opinion first?

A replacement quote can be a $6,000–$15,000 decision. It's worth a second set of eyes — especially now that so many local "family" brands are owned by private-equity chains paid to sell big tickets.

"Replace" is often "repair."Plenty of systems quoted for full replacement can be safely fixed for a fraction of the price. We'll tell you which one yours is.
We put it in writing. You get a clear, written breakdown of your real options — repair vs. replace, with honest pricing — so you can decide with confidence.

Looks like a goner? Most of the time, it isn't.

Here's what we actually find behind the most common "you need a whole new system" quotes in Northern Virginia — and, just as honestly, the times replacement really is the right call. Knowing the difference is exactly what you're paying $8,000–$20,000 to get right.

Usually a repair, not a replacement

Common symptoms that feel like a dead system — but almost always trace back to one small, fixable part:

  • Warm air blowing. Usually a dirty condenser coil, low refrigerant, or a ~$25 capacitor — not a dead compressor.
  • Keeps shutting itself off. "Short-cycling" is most often a failing capacitor, a clogged filter, or a thermostat issue — rarely the system itself.
  • Buzzing, humming, or clicking. Nine times out of ten it's a worn capacitor or fan motor — typically fixed on the same visit.
  • Not cooling at all. Can be as simple as a frozen coil from a dirty filter, a tripped breaker, or a clogged drain safety switch.
  • Iced-up unit or a spiking power bill. Almost always airflow (filter/coil) or low charge making a healthy system run long. A cleaning often fixes both.

When it really is time to replace

We'll never invent a reason to replace — but we won't sugarcoat it either. These are the cases where new is genuinely the smart money:

  • A cracked heat exchanger. On a furnace this is a carbon-monoxide safety issue. We won't patch it — it gets replaced.
  • Compressor failure on an old R-22 system. On a 12–15+ year unit, the repair often costs more than the system is worth — and R-22 refrigerant is phased out.
  • A coil that keeps leaking refrigerant. Repeated leaks on an aging coil mean you're paying to refill a system that won't hold a charge. At some point that's money down the drain.
  • Rusted-through, corroded components. Once the heat exchanger, coil, or cabinet has corroded through, repairs stop making sense.
  • Failed repeatedly and well past its service life. Multiple breakdowns in one season on a 15+ year system — replacing is usually the honest call.

A second opinion isn't about talking you out of a replacement — sometimes new really is the right move. It's about making sure that if you spend the money, you're spending it on the right thing.
