What are the tanks the HVAC tech brought?
The tall one is a recovery cylinder. Refrigerant can’t be vented into the air, so before a line is opened it gets pumped into that tank. The small tanks on the cart are a torch kit, oxygen and fuel, for brazing copper lines shut.

A recovery tank and torch kit at an outdoor unit
Right now: Ask your tech where the leak was and how it was fixed. A recharge with no repair means it’s coming back.
You’ll see both on a repair that opens the refrigerant loop: a leak fixed, a coil or compressor replaced, a new system tied in. The refrigerant comes out into the recovery tank, the copper is cut and brazed, the loop is pulled into a deep vacuum, and then it’s charged back to spec on the gauges.
A tech who shows up with only a jug of refrigerant for a quick top off is a different visit. If your system needs refrigerant every year, it has a leak, and adding more just puts off the repair.
Quick answers
What people ask about the tanks HVAC techs carry
What is a refrigerant recovery tank?
A rated cylinder that holds refrigerant pulled out of your system, so it’s never vented into the air. It goes back for recycling.
Why does an HVAC tech need a torch?
Refrigerant lines are copper joints brazed with a torch, not glued or screwed, so the loop stays sealed for years.
Is it safe to use a torch at my house?
Yes, in trained hands. Brazing is routine on every system install and every refrigerant repair.
Why does my AC need refrigerant every summer?
Because it’s leaking. Refrigerant runs in a sealed loop and doesn’t get used up, so the leak is the real repair.
