Mini split dripping water? Here’s why

A mini split dripping water down the wall almost always has a clogged condensate drain. The head pulls water out of the air, and that water drains outside through a small line. When dust and slime block the line, the tray fills up and spills over.

Right now: Turn the mini split off, put a towel under it and check that the outside drain line is dripping, not blocked.

The coil inside the head and the little drain line behind it collect dust from the room. Pets, cooking and a filter that hasn’t been rinsed all speed it up. A blinking light on the front is the unit’s way of reporting a fault code, and a blocked drain or a dirty coil is a common reason.

In heat mode, a mini split heats like a heat pump. It pauses now and then to defrost the outdoor unit, so a short stop with steam outside is normal. Water inside the house is not.

Quick answers

What people ask about mini split problems

Why is my mini split leaking water inside?

A clogged condensate drain line, a dirty coil or a unit that isn’t level. The drain is the usual one.

Why is the light blinking on my mini split?

It’s showing a fault code. The pattern means something specific to your model, and the manual lists it. If turning it off and back on doesn’t clear it, call.

How often should a mini split be cleaned?

Rinse the filters every month or so while it’s running. Have the coil and blower wheel cleaned once a year.

Why is my mini split blowing weak or smelly air?

Dirty filters first, then a coil or blower wheel that’s coated. A deep clean fixes both.
