What is the white box high on my wall?
It’s the indoor head of a ductless mini split, a small heat pump for one room or zone. It blows cool air in summer and warm air in winter, and it connects through a small hole in the wall to an outdoor unit by copper lines.

A new mini split head, the film still on
Right now: Lift the front cover and slide out the filters. If they’re gray, rinse them in the sink and let them dry.
Mini splits go where ducts don’t reach: an addition, a finished attic, a garage, a sunroom, or the one bedroom that never stays comfortable. Each head has its own remote, so you set that room without touching the rest of the house.
The filters sit under the front cover and slide out by hand; rinse them every month or two when it runs a lot. The coil and blower wheel inside still collect dust and need a real cleaning every year or so, or the head starts to smell and drip.
Quick answers
What people ask about ductless mini splits
What is a ductless mini split?
A heat pump with an outdoor unit and one or more indoor wall heads, joined by copper lines instead of ductwork.
Do mini splits heat too, or just cool?
Both. Most are heat pumps and heat well into a Virginia winter.
How often do mini split filters need cleaning?
Every month or two when it’s running a lot. They slide out from under the front cover and rinse in the sink.
Why is my mini split dripping water?
Usually a clogged drain line or a dirty coil. Our mini split dripping photo page shows what to look for.
