How Often Should You Replace a Sump Pump? Start With a Check

Plan on a new sump pump roughly every decade, sooner if it works hard, and check it every few months in between. Pumps fail quietly, so a test and a water alarm are what warn you before the storm does.

What you’re seeing in this video

Tyler Griffin, SwiftPro's owner, stands in front of the wrapped SwiftPro van in a black polo and asks a simple question: when's the last time you checked your sump pump?

His point is that a sump pump doesn't fail on a sunny afternoon. It fails in the middle of a big storm, right when it's needed most. A graphic shows before and after photos of a sump pit, the old setup next to the new one. The offer he quotes was a summer one; the current sump pump offer is on this page.

What they say on camera

When's the last time you checked your sump pump? Your sump pump is something in your basement that's pumping out water to protect your home, and it never fails. It's going to stop working when you need it most, right in the middle of a big storm. During the month of July, we have a special offer for only $697, we'll come out, take out your old sump pump, put in a brand new sump pump with a great warranty.

We'll also throw in a free water alarm to protect your home. Don't wait, click the deal below, schedule your appointment today, and take advantage of this special offer.

Why it matters in your house

  • Test it every three or four months and before storm season: pour a bucket of water into the pit and make sure the pump starts, empties it and shuts itself off.
  • A basement water alarm is cheap and sits on the floor next to the pit. If the pump fails or can't keep up, it sounds before the water reaches anything you care about.
  • Replace on age, not on failure. Swapping an aging pump on a dry day costs far less than cleaning up a flooded basement after it quits mid-storm.

Should I replace my sump pump before it fails?

Yes, if it's near the end of its life. Most pumps give 7 to 10 years, and they rarely warn you before they quit. Replacing one on a calm day costs the same as replacing it during a storm, minus the water damage. If yours is older or you don't know its age, have it checked now.
