Sump Pump Check Valve: A New Pump and a Quiet Check Valve on Test

What you’re seeing in this video

It opens on the card "Testing NEW Sump Pump with Quiet Check Valve" over a basement sump pit, the lined hole in the floor where groundwater collects. A close-up shows the valve itself, a clear body printed "The Quiet Check Valve", fitted in the discharge line just above the pump.

Then the camera looks straight down into the pit as it fills. The new pump and its float sit at the bottom, the line climbs out through the valve and a white PVC elbow with purple primer still showing at the glued joints, and the water rises until the pump kicks on and cycles.

Why it matters in your house

  • Without a check valve, the water standing in the discharge pipe drains back into the pit every time the pump stops. The pump moves the same water twice and cycles more than it should.
  • Many basic check valves use a flapper that slams shut, the thunk some homeowners hear after the pump stops. Quiet-style valves are designed to close more gently.
  • A check valve with unions on each end lets a plumber lift the pump out for service without cutting pipe. If your discharge is glued solid all the way down, the next pump swap takes more work.

How do you test a sump pump?

Lift the lid and slowly pour a bucket or two of water into the pit. The float should rise and start the pump, the water should drop fast, and the pump should shut itself off. Then look at the discharge: nothing should flow back through the check valve. Do it before the spring rains and after any long dry spell.
