How Long to Replace a Garbage Disposal? This One Took 2 Hours

A straight garbage disposal replacement often takes about an hour, and a job with a clog behind it runs longer. This one shows 2 hours start to finish, because the plumber dealt with the cause of the problem, not just the unit.

What not to put down a disposal, and when repair beats replacement: our garbage disposal guide.

What you’re seeing in this video

The camera sits across the kitchen and runs the whole job sped up. A tech in a black hoodie, beanie and blue shoe covers lays a drop cloth, empties the cabinet and spends most of the clip kneeling inside it, under the titles "Sink Disposal Replacement Time Lapse" and "Total Time: 2 hours".

Partway in, a small inset marked "The cause of the problem" cuts to the pipes under the sink, where a gloved hand works a drain cable into the line. The next card reads "Be mindful of what goes down your sink to prevent food clogs."

It closes on "Final result: a working disposal system thanks to SwiftPro" as the tech finishes up at the sink.

Why it matters in your house

  • A swap alone can go faster. When the drain past the disposal is clogged too, that line has to be cleared first, or the new unit backs up the same way the old one did.
  • If your disposal hums but won't spin, or water rises in the other sink bowl, the trouble may be the drain and not the disposal. Ask the plumber to check both.
  • Empty the cabinet before the plumber arrives. Clearing out cleaning supplies under the sink eats into the job, and the extra room makes the work cleaner.

How long does it take a plumber to replace a garbage disposal?

A straight swap on the same mount often takes about an hour. Add time if the mounting ring has to change, the unit is hardwired, the dishwasher drains through it, or the line past it is clogged. This job shows 2 hours start to finish because the cause of the problem got handled along with the unit.
