An Old American Standard AC Unit, Hauled Out and Replaced

When an old American Standard AC unit is done, the replacement gets sized to the house, not matched to the old badge. Here SwiftPro techs wheel one out of a townhouse yard and braze, wire and set a new Carrier in its place.

What you’re seeing in this video

The title card, "Replacing an old A/C unit w/ SwiftPro", sits over the old American Standard condenser in a mulch bed against a wooden fence. A tech wheels it out on a hand truck down a path between the fences, and out front two others meet a pickup where the boxed new unit comes down on the liftgate.

At the pad, a tech in red gloves brazes the copper with a rag wrapped around the service valve to shield it from the heat, and a new filter drier, the small canister that traps moisture and debris, goes into the line. The new unit's label reads Refrigerant Safety Group A2L.

Another tech levels and mounts a new disconnect box on the siding and wires it to the unit. Before and after shots close it out: the old American Standard in the mulch, then the Carrier on its pad.

Why it matters in your house

  • Check the data plate on your own condenser. The serial number tells its age, and a unit past 15 years on an older refrigerant is usually a replace, not a repair.
  • That A2L label marks the newer, lower-impact refrigerants that systems use now. They call for a matched indoor coil and installers trained to braze and charge them safely.
  • American Standard or Carrier, the badge matters less than the install: the right size, clean brazed joints, a fresh filter drier and a proper vacuum before startup.

American Standard vs Carrier: which AC is better?

Both are long-running brands with lines from basic single-stage up to variable-speed. Within the same tier, the bigger difference is the installer: sizing from a load calculation, a matched indoor coil, nitrogen through the copper while brazing and a deep vacuum. Pick the tier that fits your house and how long you'll stay, then pick the contractor.
