Burning smell from the furnace: when to worry

A dusty, burning smell the first few times the heat runs each fall is usually normal: dust on the burners and heat exchanger cooking off. A smell that hangs around for days, smells like hot plastic or rubber, or smells like rotten eggs is not, and that’s when you shut it off and call.

A gas furnace like the one making the smell

Right now: A dusty smell on the first cold night is normal. A hot wire smell, or one that hangs on, means shut it off and call.

Every spring and summer, dust settles inside the furnace. The first cold morning it gets hot for the first time in months, and you smell it at the registers. It should fade within a day of the heat running. Changing the filter first helps.

Hot plastic or rubber is different. That points at wiring, a motor running hot or a belt slipping. Rotten eggs is the smell added to natural gas and propane: leave the house and call the gas company from outside before you call us.

Quick answers

What people ask about furnace smells

Is it normal for my furnace to smell like burning when I first turn it on?

Yes, for the first few cycles of the season. Dust on the burners and the heat exchanger burns off. If the smell is still there after a day of heating, have it checked.

What does an electrical burning smell from the furnace mean?

Hot plastic or rubber usually means wiring, a blower motor running hot or a failing part. Turn the furnace off at the thermostat and the switch beside it and call.

Why does my furnace smell like rotten eggs?

That’s the smell put into gas so you’d notice a leak. Get everyone out, don’t flip switches, and call your gas company from outside.

Can a dirty filter cause a burning smell?

It can make it worse. A packed filter starves the furnace of air, it runs hotter, and the dust on it can smell scorched. Swap it first.
