Kitchen sink clogged? What’s usually in there

Most kitchen sink clogs are grease and food that went down warm and set up cold in the pipe. This one came out in handfuls. If both sides of the sink back up, or the dishwasher drains into the sink, the clog is past the trap, in the line inside the wall.

Pulling a kitchen clog out by hand

Right now: Skip the chemical drain cleaner. Bail out the standing water and try a plunger with the other side covered.

Grease is liquid in the pan and solid in the pipe. It coats the inside of the drain, catches rice, pasta and coffee grounds, and the opening gets smaller every week until one big dinner closes it. That’s why kitchen clogs spike around Thanksgiving.

A plunger on one side with the other side blocked can push a fresh clog through. A clog that keeps coming back means the line is coated, and it needs to be cleared and looked at with a camera, not chased with another bottle of drain cleaner.

Quick answers

What people ask about kitchen sink clogs

Why is my kitchen sink clogged on both sides?

Both sides share one drain past the trap, so the clog is in that shared line, usually grease and food inside the wall.

Why does my dishwasher drain into the sink?

The dishwasher drains through the same line as the sink. When that line is partly clogged, the water has nowhere to go but up into the sink.

Is it OK to use drain cleaner on a kitchen sink?

It rarely clears grease for long and it’s hard on older pipes. If you have a disposal, it can damage that too.

What should never go down a kitchen sink?

Grease and cooking fat, coffee grounds, rice, pasta, eggshells and anything stringy like celery. They’re the clogs we pull out most.
