Water line leak in the yard: what it looks like

This is a water service line we dug down to in a Northern Virginia yard, with water pooling around the pipe where it was leaking. On top, it was a patch of lawn that stayed soggy when everything around it was dry.

Dug down to the pipe, water pooling around it

Right now: Close the main shutoff and watch the water meter. If the dial still moves, the leak is on the yard side.

The water line runs from the meter at the street to your house, a few feet underground. When it leaks, the signs show up on top: a wet spot that never dries, grass greener in one stripe, low pressure in the house or a water bill that jumps for no reason.

To check, turn off every tap and look at your water meter. If it’s still moving, water is going somewhere. We find where, dig only where we need to and fix the line.

Quick answers

What people ask about yard water line leaks

How do I know if my water line is leaking in the yard?

A wet or soggy spot that stays when the rest of the yard is dry, a hissing sound at the meter, low water pressure or a bill that jumps without a reason.

How do I check for a water line leak?

Turn off every faucet, the washer and the ice maker, then watch the water meter. If the dial or the leak indicator still moves, water is leaking somewhere.

Who is responsible for the water line in my yard?

In most of Northern Virginia, the line from the meter to your house is yours, and the utility owns the meter and the line to the street side of it.

Is a yard water line leak an emergency?

If water is coming up out of the ground or you have no pressure in the house, yes: turn off the main shutoff and call. A slow wet spot can wait for a scheduled visit, but not for months.
