The short version
A leak in a buried line doesn’t drip where you can see it. It shows up in the yard, the bill, or the pressure.
Between the meter and the house, in dry weather. That’s the line.
Same people, same habits, bigger bill. Turn everything off and watch the meter’s leak indicator.
Once the pressure reducing valve checks out, a narrowed or leaking service line is next on the list. Older galvanized lines rust shut from the inside.
What to expect
A leak test at the meter, then a look at where the line runs and what it’s made of. You get a written price before any digging.
We pull the county plumbing permit and call Miss Utility so every buried line in the yard is marked before a shovel goes in.
A trench from the meter to where the line enters the house, new pipe laid in it, connected at both ends. The water is off while we tie in, not the whole day.
The county inspects before the trench is filled. Then it’s backfilled, graded and the yard goes back.

Where we go
Our shop is in Chantilly. Service line work in and around:
A service line dug out during a repair. The trench runs where the line runs, and the yard goes back when it’s done.
Questions we hear every week
Fairfax Water owns the main and the meter. The service line from the meter to your house is yours, so a leak on that side is your repair.
The base policy usually doesn’t. A service line endorsement does: Erie sells one with $10,000 or $25,000 of coverage, and Liberty Mutual’s carries $12,000 with a $500 deductible. Erie’s won’t pay for a blockage with no damage. Check your declarations page for the word service line.
Both are approved under the Virginia plumbing code, which requires water service pipe to be NSF 61 listed for drinking water. Copper by default, PEX where it fits the run better, and the quote says which.
Turn off every faucet and appliance, then look at the meter. If the small leak indicator is still turning, water is going somewhere. Between the meter and the house is the first place to look.

Book a visit. We’ll find where the water’s going before anyone prices a new line, and if it’s a fitting at the meter instead, you’ll hear that.
