Carrier vs Trane is close, and we install both, so we don’t have a reason to oversell either one. Our first pick for most Northern Virginia houses is Trane. Carrier’s top furnace and heat pump edge Trane’s on the efficiency sticker; Trane wins on how it holds up and how its parts reach us. A furnace and AC from either runs $8,898 to $23,000 installed in our price book, by the size of the house and how far up the line you go. From about $148 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit.

Why Trane is our first pick

How it holds up. In Consumer Reports’ 2022 central air survey of 23,997 systems, Trane was the only one of 21 brands rated Excellent for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction; Carrier was rated Excellent for owner satisfaction (Consumer Reports, 2022). Trane also says every product goes through rigorous testing in its own SEET labs. The rest is our opinion: it’s the equipment we’d put in our own houses.

Parts. We buy Trane through Ferguson.

Rebates. Trane’s instant rebates run through participating independent Trane Comfort Specialist dealers, and we’re one (Trane’s dealer page for us).

Where Carrier wins

The efficiency sticker. The Infinity 98 furnace is rated up to 98.5% AFUE against Trane’s 97.3%, and the Infinity 23 heat pump up to 23 SEER2 against 22.4. In a Northern Virginia house the gas bill difference between 97.3% and 98.5% is small; it’s a fair tiebreaker, not a reason on its own.

The labor option. Register a Carrier through a participating dealer and you can take 5 years of parts plus 3 years of labor instead of 10 years of parts. We put two years of our own labor on every install either way.

We’re on Carrier’s dealer locator as Carrier experts, and we’ll price a Carrier beside a Trane, same size and scope, whenever you ask.

What actually decides how long it lasts

Not the badge. A furnace or heat pump sized off a real load calculation, with ducts that can move the air it needs, a refrigerant charge set by measurement and a filter that gets changed outlives a better brand put in badly. Carrier says a gas furnace lasts 15 to 20 years, and that matches what we see on systems that get a maintenance visit every year.

Bryant, Payne and American Standard

Bryant is a Carrier company, sold through its own dealers, and Payne is now WeatherMaker by Carrier. American Standard is Trane Technologies’ other brand, on the same furnace warranty document as Trane. So “Carrier vs American Standard” is the same question as this one with different badges. Any of them that’s already in your house gets the same $99 diagnostic from us.

Carrier vs Trane questions people ask us

Is Carrier or Trane better?

Both are good brands. We pick Trane first for most houses: Consumer Reports’ 2022 reliability result, parts through Ferguson, and Trane’s rebates through its Comfort Specialists. Carrier’s top models are a little more efficient. Installed, a furnace and AC from either is $8,898 to $23,000 in our price book. From about $148 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit.

Which lasts longer, Carrier or Trane?

In Consumer Reports’ 2022 central air survey, Trane was the only one of 21 brands rated Excellent for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. Sizing, ductwork and a yearly maintenance visit still decide it more than the brand; expect 15 to 20 years from a furnace either way.

Do you install both Carrier and Trane?

Yes. We’re a Trane Comfort Specialist and on Carrier’s dealer locator as Carrier experts, and we’ll price both in writing so you can compare.

Is American Standard the same as Trane?

Same company, Trane Technologies, and the same furnace warranty document. The models and names differ.

Can you fix my Carrier or Trane if you didn’t install it?

Yes. The diagnostic is $99 and the repair is priced in writing first. Our Carrier repair page lists the common repairs and their prices.
