The short answer

Here’s the girl math on a Northern Virginia furnace this winter: a $67 heating check costs less than a nice dinner, so it’s basically free, and the $229 deep clean that’s regularly $467 just put $238 in your pocket. The real math: $67 per system through December 31, and you only need the deep clean if the tech finds a dirty blower wheel or you want it done.

$67 is under a hundred, and things under a hundred don’t count. It counts as $67, once, per system. Two systems is two checks.

The deep clean is $229 instead of $467, so I’m up $238. You spent $229 and it’s a real discount. If we can’t get the blower wheel out, you pay $67.

The girl math The real math
I change the filter myself, so the furnace is basically serviced. A filter is a good start, and the filter is the part you can see. The burners and the blower wheel are the part a tech checks.

When to skip the deep clean

If the wheel’s clean, you don’t need it, and the check tells you that. Have it done when the blower is caked, the house has been renovated, or nobody can remember the last service. Our furnace tune-up cost guide has the longer version.

Three free moves before the visit

  • Change the filter and write the date on it. If it’s gray and bowed, tell the tech how long it’s been in there.
  • Clear a walking path to the furnace, and move the boxes and paint cans away from it.
  • Write down anything odd from last winter: a smell on the first run, a rattle, a room that never warmed up. A tech can check for a noise you describe, even when it doesn’t make it that day.

Two furnaces in the house, like one for the basement and one upstairs, means two checks. Girl math says the second is half off because you already paid for the first. It’s still per system, so plan on $134.

Do the math before the first cold night

The check is through December 31, and a furnace that won’t start tends to pick the coldest night to mention it. Not sure how old yours is? Our equipment age decoder turns the serial number into a year. If it’s old and somebody already quoted you a new one, a second opinion is free.

The cookie clause

Book the $99 drain clearing, the $67 heating check, the $199 dryer vent cleaning or the $99 water heater flush from goswiftpro.com/cookiesoffer and a box of free MOLTN cookies comes with it, book by November 30. By rule 6 of girl math for home repairs, that makes the heating check cheaper. It doesn’t, but they’re very good cookies.
