A SwiftPro plumber testing an RPZ backflow preventer with a gauge kit in an Ashburn, Virginia basement

What happens during a backflow test?

A plumber hooks a gauge kit to the test ports on your backflow preventer, closes a valve or two and reads the pressure. That shows whether each check inside is still holding.

Right now: Find the letter from your water utility and check the due date on it, then book before it passes.

The hoses run from the gauge to the small test cocks on the side of the valve. We shut the water off for a moment, then open and close each port in order. Every check inside has to hold its pressure, and the relief valve has to open when it should. The readings go on the test form.

Pass, and we tag the device and send the results to your water utility. Fail, and it’s usually a worn rubber part inside that we can rebuild on the same visit, then test again. Either way your water is only off for a short stretch.

Quick answers

What people ask about backflow tests

How often does a backflow preventer need testing?

Every year in most of Northern Virginia. Your water utility mails a letter when it’s due.

Will my water be shut off during a backflow test?

Only briefly. We close the valves to read the pressures, then turn it right back on.

What happens if my backflow preventer fails the test?

We show you which part failed. Most fails are a worn seal or spring we can rebuild, then we test it again and file the passing result.

Who sends the test results to the water company?

We do. The test form goes to your utility, so you don’t have to chase it.
