What does a tankless water heater install look like?
The unit hangs on the wall, new copper runs to it overhead, and a white plastic vent goes out the side of the house. This is one of ours going in, a condensing gas tankless in a basement.

From one of our jobs
A new tankless water heater being piped in
Right now: Take a photo of the gas pipe going into your water heater. From that we can tell you whether a tankless needs a bigger line.
Most of the job is the piping you see up top. A tankless burns a lot of gas for a short time, so the gas line often has to be bigger than the one the old tank used. Hot and cold water get service valves so the unit can be flushed later. A condensing model also needs a drain for the water it makes, and a neutralizer so that water doesn’t eat the drain.
Where the old tank sat becomes floor space, and you stop running out of hot water in the middle of a shower. What you take on is a yearly descale, because hard water scales the heat exchanger. Ask about that before you buy, not after.
Quick answers
What people ask about tankless water heater installs
How long does a tankless water heater install take?
Usually a day. Tank to tankless takes longer than tank to tank, because of the gas, vent and drain work.
Does a tankless water heater need a bigger gas line?
Often, yes. It burns a lot of gas for a short time, so the line has to be sized for it. We check that before we give you a price.
Where does a tankless water heater vent?
Most condensing units vent through plastic pipe out a side wall, so the old chimney isn’t needed.
Does a tankless water heater need maintenance?
Yes. A flush through the service valves once a year clears scale out of the heat exchanger.
