Sump pump replacement, before and after
On the left, the old sump pump we pulled out of the pit; on the right, the new one in its place with a quiet check valve on the discharge. A worn pump is the one that quits during the storm you bought it for.

From one of our jobs
The old pump out, the new one in the pit
Right now: Pour a bucket of water into the pit. The pump should start, empty it and shut off on its own.
The check valve keeps the water in the pipe from falling back into the pit when the pump shuts off. A quiet one stops the bang you hear in the basement every time it cycles.
Our replacement is a new cast iron pump in your existing pit, the quiet check valve, new pipe to the discharge, the old pump hauled away and a bucket test before we leave.
Quick answers
What people ask about sump pumps
How do I know if my sump pump is failing?
It runs and runs without emptying the pit, it hums but doesn’t pump, it cycles on and off with little water, or it’s more than seven to ten years old.
Why does my sump pump bang when it shuts off?
Water in the discharge pipe falls back and slams the check valve shut. A quiet check valve stops the bang.
How long does a sump pump last?
Usually seven to ten years. One that runs a lot wears out sooner.
