Right now: Look under your backflow preventer. Water dripping or spraying from the relief port means a part inside is failing.

The handles at each end are the shutoffs we use to test it. The small brass ports on the side are where the test kit hooks up. The funnel underneath is the air gap: when the relief valve opens, the water drops through it to a drain instead of onto your floor.

We replace an RPZ when it keeps dumping water, fails a test and can’t be rebuilt to pass, or is old enough that parts are hard to get. Once it’s in, we test it right away and send the passing result to your water utility, so you start the year clean.

Quick answers

What people ask about replacing a backflow preventer

When should an RPZ be replaced instead of rebuilt?

When it keeps failing, keeps dumping water after a rebuild, or parts for it are hard to find. Until then a rebuild is usually the right call.

Why is my RPZ dumping water?

The relief valve opens when a check inside isn’t holding or the pressure on the street side drops. A steady drip usually means a worn part.

Does a new backflow preventer need to be tested?

Yes. A new one gets tested when it goes in, and the result is filed with your water utility.

Do I need a drain under my RPZ?

It needs somewhere for water to go when the relief valve opens. The funnel and a drain line keep it off your floor.
