What is the white filter on my water line?
Most likely it’s a scale prevention filter, the kind sold as a softener that uses no salt. Water runs through a cartridge that keeps hardness from sticking to your pipes and water heater.

A scale prevention filter on a basement water line
Right now: Look for a date written on the filter housing or a sticker. Past a year means the cartridge is due.
This one sits on the main line right after the shutoff, so every tap in the house gets filtered water. Inside the white housing is a cartridge. It changes the hardness minerals so they stay in the water instead of building up as crust on fixtures, in the water heater and in a tankless heat exchanger.
It doesn’t take the hardness out the way a salt softener does, so you can still get spots on glass. And the cartridge wears out, usually once a year. If yours has no date on it or you can’t remember the last change, it’s probably doing nothing now. A water test tells you what your water actually needs.
Quick answers
What people ask about whole house scale filters
Is a scale filter the same as a water softener?
No. A softener swaps the hardness out using salt. A scale filter leaves it in the water but keeps it from sticking, and it needs no salt and no drain.
How often do you change a whole house scale filter cartridge?
Usually once a year, sooner with very hard water or a big household.
Does a scale filter help a water heater?
Yes, that’s one of the main reasons to have one. Less scale on the bottom of a tank and less in a tankless heat exchanger.
Do I need a softener or a scale filter?
It depends on how hard your water is and what bothers you. A water test gives you the number, then the choice is easy.
