Whole house water filter on a bypass loop
The white housing on this copper loop is a whole house water filter, put in by our plumbers. Every drop that comes into the house goes through it first, unless you turn the red handles to send water around it.

The filter housing and its three red valves
Right now: Find the filter housing near the main shutoff and check the date on the cartridge. Over six months old, swap it.
The loop is a bypass. Close the two valves on either side of the filter, open the one across the top, and the house keeps its water while you change the cartridge. That’s the part people skip when they put a filter in themselves, and then they can’t change it without shutting off the whole house.
A filter like this catches sediment and can take out chlorine taste and smell. It doesn’t soften water. If you’re fighting white crust on faucets and spots on glasses, that’s hardness, and a water test tells you which one you need.
Quick answers
What people ask about whole house water filters
What does a whole house water filter do?
It filters every drop of water coming into the house. Most take out sediment, and carbon filters take out chlorine taste and smell.
What are the valves around my water filter for?
They’re a bypass. Turn them to send water around the filter so you can change the cartridge without shutting off the house.
Does a whole house filter soften water?
No. Hardness is dissolved minerals that a filter lets through. A softener handles hardness, and many homes here want both.
How often should I change a whole house filter?
Most cartridges every three to six months. Low water pressure across the house is the sign one is overdue.
Who installs whole house water filters in Northern Virginia?
