Skip your yearly backflow test and nothing happens the first day. Then the water supplier sends a reminder, then another, and in some Northern Virginia towns the next step is turning off your water until the test report shows up. The fix is simple: our backflow test is $250, normally $300, and you can book or pay for it on our backflow testing page.
Think of it like a car inspection sticker. Driving with an expired one doesn’t break the car, but sooner or later somebody notices, and the longer you wait the more it costs you in hassle. Below is exactly what the local rules say happens, in order, plus the risk nobody puts in the letter.
What happens if you skip a backflow test, step by step
Every water supplier words it a little differently, but the path is the same. Here it is, using their own rules:
- A reminder comes first. Stafford County, for one, sends a reminder 30 days before the test is due.
- The due date passes. In Purcellville and Middleburg the form is due within 30 days of getting the town’s letter.
- A second letter. Both towns send a reminder and allow an additional 30 days.
- The water gets turned off. After that, both towns say they’ll assume there’s a problem and discontinue water service until the form is received. Loudoun Water says it may disconnect and discontinue the water service when a device isn’t brought up to code.
Not every supplier spells out every step, and none of them wants to shut anybody’s water off. But the rule behind all of them is the same: Virginia’s waterworks regulation 12VAC5-590-600 requires the test every year and puts it on the owner.
Is there a fine for skipping a backflow test?
In the rules we read for this area, the penalty they spell out isn’t a dollar fine. It’s your water. Purcellville, Middleburg and Loudoun Water all name shutting off service as the step for a house that won’t comply, and water you can’t use is worse than any fine.
There’s a quieter cost too. A report from the wrong tester doesn’t count. Since January 1, 2023, Loudoun Water treats a test report as void if the tester doesn’t hold the state’s DPOR backflow certification. A test that gets thrown out means paying twice.
$250 Yearly Backflow Test
The yearly test your water utility or county asks for, on a home's backflow preventer up to 1 inch. About backflow testing
The real risk of skipping the backflow test: the device you can’t see failing
The letters are annoying. The bigger deal is that nobody knows if your backflow preventer still works.
Here’s why that matters. Lawn sprinkler pipes sit in soil that gets fertilizer and weed killer, and Loudoun Water warns that sprinkler water can become contaminated from lawn care chemicals and get siphoned back through the sprinkler heads. All it takes is a pressure drop in the street, like a water main break or a crew flushing a hydrant. A working backflow preventer slams shut. A worn-out one might not, and that water heads back toward your kitchen tap and your neighbors’.
The springs and rubber inside wear out where you can’t see them, which is why backflow testing is required every year. The pressure part is explained in backflow and water pressure, the warning signs are in signs of a backflow problem, and the basics are in what backflow is in plumbing.
Already late on your backflow test? Do this
Don’t panic and don’t ignore the letter. Here’s how to get back on track:
- Book the test now. A late test still counts once it’s done and the report is in.
- Keep the letter. It usually names your account and your device, which makes the report go to the right place.
- Watch for the confirmation. Fairfax County emails one when the report arrives; if you don’t see it within 14 days, check with the county.
Fairfax wants reports in within 10 business days of the test date, and Stafford wants them within 7 days, so pick a tester who sends it the same week.

What happens if the backflow test fails
A fail isn’t a fine either. It just starts a short clock to get the device fixed and tested again.
- Loudoun Water: repaired or replaced and retested within 30 days of its notice, and a replacement is done by a master plumber.
- Fairfax County: repaired or replaced and retested within 10 business days of the failed test.
Often a repair kit with new springs and rubber does it. A cracked body means a new device. Either way, with us you get a written quote first. More on that in what a broken backflow preventer looks like and what a leaking backflow preventer means.
Who is responsible when a backflow test gets skipped
The owner. Virginia’s rule puts the test on the water customer, and Prince William Water says the owner is responsible for the required forms reaching its cross-connection coordinator. The tester fills out and sends the form, but if it never shows up, the letter comes to you.

Why SwiftPro makes the backflow test easy to stop skipping
Most people skip it because it sounds like a hassle. With us it isn’t:
- Pay $250 online, normally $300. Or call (703) 997-9757, or book a time online, whichever you like.
- We call you to pick the day. Tell us where the device is and whether the sprinkler is shut down for winter, and keep your notice handy.
- We test it and tag it. A SwiftPro plumber hooks the gauge to the device, reads every check and writes the numbers down.
- We send the report where your water supplier wants it. Loudoun Water, Fairfax County, Prince William Water and the town programs each take it their own way, and yours goes in the way your notice asks.
- If it fails, you get a written quote before any repair. Nothing gets fixed until you say yes, and the device is tested again once it is.

Skipped backflow test questions
What happens if you skip a backflow test?
You get a reminder, then a second letter, and some water suppliers shut off service until the report arrives. Purcellville and Middleburg give 30 days plus 30 more; Loudoun Water may disconnect a device that isn’t brought up to code.
Can the water company shut off my water for not doing a backflow test?
Yes, in some places. Purcellville and Middleburg say they’ll discontinue water service until the form is received, and Loudoun Water says it may disconnect service.
Is there a fine for not doing a backflow test?
The local rules we read name shutting off water service, not a set dollar fine, as the step for a home that doesn’t comply.
Who is responsible for the backflow test, me or the water company?
You, the owner. Virginia’s rule puts the yearly test on the water customer, and Prince William Water holds the owner responsible for the forms reaching it.
My backflow test is late. Is it too late?
No. Book it now; a late test counts once it’s done and the report is in. Keep the letter so the report goes to the right account.
What if my backflow test fails?
It gets fixed and retested on a short clock: 30 days in Loudoun Water, 10 business days in Fairfax County. We give you a written quote before any repair.
How much is a backflow test?
$250 for one home, normally $300, on a residential device up to 1 inch. Pay online and we call to pick the day.
