Why did my sump pump stop working?
Look at the bottom of this one. Sludge and grit from the pit packed the intake and the float, so the pump couldn’t sense the water or move it. That, a burned out motor and a tripped outlet are the three reasons we see most.

An old sump pump, pulled from the pit
Right now: Check the plug and the outlet’s reset button, then pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch.
Sump pumps work hardest in exactly the storms you don’t want them to fail in, and most last seven to ten years. A pump that hums but doesn’t empty the pit, runs nonstop, or clicks on and off every few seconds is telling you it’s near the end.
First check: is it plugged in, and is the outlet’s reset button tripped? Then pour a bucket of water into the pit and watch the float rise. If the pump doesn’t start, or starts and the level doesn’t drop, it’s time for a new one before the next big rain.
Quick answers
What people ask about sump pumps that stop
Why is my sump pump humming but not pumping?
The motor runs but water isn’t moving: a clogged intake, a stuck impeller, or a frozen or blocked discharge line.
How long do sump pumps last?
Usually seven to ten years. Pumps that run often, or sit in a muddy pit, wear out sooner.
What should I do if my sump pump stops during a storm?
Check the plug and the outlet, then bail or wet vac the pit to buy time, and call. Don’t stand in water near the outlet.
Can a sump pump be repaired?
A stuck float or a bad check valve, yes. A burned out motor means a new pump.
