Why do I have two water heaters?
Because one tank couldn’t keep up. Big homes, big soaking tubs and houses with a lot of bathrooms often got two tanks piped together, so twice the hot water is ready at once. Some homes have two that each serve one end of the house.

Two gas water heaters, side by side
Right now: Run the hot water, then carefully touch the hot pipe on each tank. The one that stays cool is the one failing.
When two tanks are piped together they share the load. If one fails, the other usually keeps working, so the first sign is hot water running out sooner than it used to. Both tanks are usually the same age, so when one goes, the other isn’t far behind.
Swapping both for one tankless water heater is the other option we price out. It heats as the water flows, so a long shower doesn’t drain it, and it gives you back the floor space. We show you both prices side by side.
Quick answers
What people ask about homes with two water heaters
Why would a house have two water heaters?
To supply more hot water at once than one tank can, or to serve two ends of a big house.
If one of my two water heaters fails, do I replace both?
Not always, but they’re usually the same age. We check the second one and give you the choice in writing.
Can I replace two water heaters with one tankless?
Often, yes, if the gas line and venting can handle it. We check both before we price it.
How do I tell which of my two water heaters is bad?
Run the hot water, then carefully touch the hot pipe on top of each. The one that stays cool, or has water under it, is the one.
