What the sump pump
is trying to tell you

The calls we get about sump pumps, and what they usually turn out to be. Where our plumbers have a short video on it, it’s linked.

It runs constantly

After days of rain, that can be normal. In dry weather it means the check valve is letting water fall back into the pit, the float is stuck on, or water is getting in somewhere it shouldn’t.

Watch: sump pump running constantly.

It won’t turn on

Check the breaker and the GFCI outlet it plugs into first. If it has power and the pit is filling, it’s the float switch or the motor.

On a lot of pumps the float switch is part of the pump, so a failed switch usually means a new pump. Watch: testing a sump pump float switch.

It turns on and off every few seconds

Short cycling usually means the check valve has failed and the same water keeps falling back, or the float is set too tight.

It wears a pump out fast. A new check valve is often the whole fix.

A loud thud when it shuts off

That bang is the check valve slamming shut behind the column of water. Rattling or grinding while it runs is the impeller or a worn motor.

A quiet check valve stops the thud, and one comes with every $697 replacement.

The high water alarm is going off

The pit filled past where the pump should have kicked on: the pump failed, lost power, or can’t keep up.

Check the breaker and the outlet. If it has power and isn’t pumping, call now, before the water gets over the rim.

The power keeps going out in storms

A sump pump stops when the power does, and that’s usually the night it’s raining hardest.

A battery backup takes over in an outage. What it costs, and what the county pays back, is below.

Fix it or replace it

When a repair beats
a new sump pump

  • Repair it when the pump runs and something around it failed: the check valve, the discharge line, a float hung up on the pit wall, or the power to it.
  • Replace it when the motor or its built-in float switch has failed. A new cast iron pump in your pit is $697 installed, with a quiet check valve, new pipe to the discharge, the old pump hauled away, a bucket test and a water alarm.
  • One per home, residential only. Say the offer when you book. Not combinable with other offers. A new or deeper pit, outside discharge work, a battery backup and electrical work are extra.
  • Most of the sump pump calls we get end with a new pump, because by the time a sump pump acts up, the part that’s failing is usually the pump.
  • See the $697 sump pump replacement, or price yours with the sump pump estimator.

Asked on the phone

Sump pump questions,
answered straight

How much does sump pump repair cost?

A plumbing diagnosis visit is $49, or $250 after hours, and the repair is priced in writing before any work. When the pump itself has failed, a new one in your pit is $697 installed, and a sump pump with a battery backup runs $3,200 to $4,200. From about $53 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works

Why does my sump pump keep running?

After a lot of rain it may just be keeping up. In dry weather, the usual causes are a check valve letting water fall back into the pit, a float stuck in the on position, or a pump too worn to empty the pit.

Can a sump pump be repaired, or does it need replacing?

If the pump runs and something around it failed, like the check valve, the discharge line or a float hung up on the pit wall, it’s a repair. If the motor or its built-in float switch has failed, the pump gets replaced.

Does Fairfax County pay for a battery backup sump pump?

Yes. Fairfax County’s Flood Mitigation Assistance Program pays back half of a battery backup sump pump, up to $5,000 a property, after the work is done and paid for. It’s first come, first served, and it doesn’t cover the Town of Vienna, the Town of Herndon or the City of Fairfax. The City of Alexandria runs its own Flood Mitigation Grant Program on similar terms.

Do I need a battery backup sump pump?

If the basement has ever taken water, or the power goes out in storms where you live, it’s worth it. A sump pump stops when the power does.

What’s the difference between a sump pump and an ejector pump?

A sump pump moves groundwater out of a pit and away from the house. An ejector pump lifts sewage from a basement bathroom or laundry up to the sewer line, out of a sealed basin.
