What’s wrong with it

What your toilet is
trying to tell you

The toilet calls we get, what they usually turn out to be, and what you can check before anyone comes out.

It runs on its own, or won’t stop filling

The flapper isn’t sealing, so the tank keeps topping itself up, or the fill valve is set so high the water spills into the overflow tube. A running toilet wastes more water than a dripping faucet.

Put ten drops of food coloring in the tank and wait ten minutes. Color in the bowl without a flush means the flapper. Three fixes, cheapest first.

Water on the floor around the base

The wax ring under the toilet has stopped sealing, the toilet has worked loose, or the flange it bolts to is cracked or rusted through.

Stop using it until it’s fixed. A leaking wax ring soaks the subfloor first and the ceiling below second. The fix is pulling the toilet, a new ring and bolts, the flange repaired if it needs it, and the toilet set back down level.

It rocks when you sit down

Loose bolts at the base, a floor that isn’t flat, or a broken flange. Every rock pulls at the wax seal underneath.

Worth fixing soon, because a toilet that rocks long enough starts leaking at the base. Usually shims and a new wax ring.

A weak flush, or it takes two

A partial clog in the trap, a tank that isn’t filling high enough, mineral buildup in the holes under the rim, or one of the first low-flow toilets from the early 1990s that never flushed right.

Rebuilding the inside of the tank fixes most of these. Those early low-flow toilets are the one case where a new toilet beats repairing the old one.

It clogs all the time

Something stuck in the trap, like a toy, a wipe or a toothbrush cap, or a slow drain line past the toilet.

If the tub gurgles or another drain backs up when you flush, it’s the line they share, not the toilet: drain cleaning.

Dripping from the tank or the line behind it

The bolts and gasket between the tank and the bowl, the supply line, or the shutoff valve on the wall.

Old shutoff valves often won’t close all the way when you need them. If yours won’t, it’s worth replacing while the plumber is there.

Repair it or replace it

When a new toilet beats
fixing the old one

  • Repair it when the bowl and tank are sound: a flapper, a fill valve, a flush valve, a wax ring, the tank gasket, the supply line or the shutoff valve. Most toilets are worth it.
  • Replace it when the porcelain is cracked, it clogs with normal use, or the base still leaks after a new wax ring.
  • Very old toilets show up on the water bill. One from before 1994 can use 3.5 gallons a flush or more. A new WaterSense toilet uses 1.28 gallons or less.
  • We supply the toilet, or install yours. Supplied and installed runs $800 to $1,300. The toilet you bought, installed, runs $400 to $500.
  • The long read: what a toilet replacement costs, and when it’s not worth it.

Asked on the phone

Toilet repair questions,
answered straight

How much does toilet repair cost in Northern Virginia?

Most toilet repairs run $250 to $900, and a plumbing diagnosis visit is $49, or $250 after hours. A new toilet installed runs $800 to $1,300 with us supplying it, or $400 to $500 for a toilet you’ve already bought.

Is it worth repairing an old toilet?

Usually, yes. The inside of a tank can be rebuilt and the toilet works like new. Replace it when the porcelain is cracked, it clogs with normal use, or it’s a toilet from before 1994 using 3.5 gallons a flush or more.

Why is water leaking from the base of my toilet?

Almost always the wax ring underneath, sometimes a loose toilet or a broken flange. Stop using it, because the water goes into the subfloor. Pulling the toilet and replacing the ring is the fix.

Why does my toilet keep running?

The flapper isn’t sealing, or the fill valve is overfilling the tank into the overflow tube. Both are parts, not a new toilet.

Can you install a toilet I bought myself?

Yes. Installing a toilet you’ve bought runs $400 to $500. It’s set on a new wax ring, connected and tested for leaks before we leave.

Do you come out for an overflowing toilet at night?

Yes, we run 24/7 emergency service. First turn the valve on the wall behind the toilet clockwise to stop the water.

How long does it take to replace a toilet?

Most toilet replacements take a couple of hours. A broken flange or a soft spot in the floor under it adds time, and you’d see that on the written price first.
