Garbage disposal not working?
The garbage disposal calls we get, and what they usually turn out to be. The first two you can often fix yourself in a few minutes.
Something hard is wedged between the spinning plate and the wall, and the motor can’t turn it.
Switch it off. Turn the hex socket on the bottom with the little wrench it came with, or a quarter inch Allen key, until it turns freely, then press the red reset button. Still humming with nothing in it? The motor’s done.
The reset button on the bottom has tripped, the breaker is off, it’s come unplugged, or the wall switch or the motor has failed.
Press the reset button, check the breaker and the plug under the sink. Still dead after that? That’s a call.
The seals inside the disposal have worn through. Water coming out of the body of the unit can’t be repaired.
That’s a replacement. Put a bowl under it and don’t run it until then.
The mount at the sink, the dishwasher hose connection or the drain pipe off the side. These are connections, not the disposal.
Usually a repair: the sink flange resealed, or a connection tightened or replaced.
That’s the drain past the disposal, usually the trap or the line in the wall packed with grease and food.
Drain cleaning is the fix, not a new disposal.
A spoon or a bottle cap inside, worn grinding parts, or food stuck under the rubber splash guard.
Switch it off at the switch and the breaker, then fish it out with tongs. Never fingers, even with the power off.
