Want your own number before anyone comes out? The HVAC estimator prices your house in a few questions.
What moves the price. The number of zones, how far the heads are from the outdoor unit, whether a head goes on a wall or in a ceiling, and the electrical work. The HVAC estimator prices yours by room, and our mini split brands guide compares the equipment.
Where it fits
Where a mini split
makes the most sense
A mini split heats and cools one room or zone through a head on the wall, with no ductwork at all.
- An addition or a sunroom the old ductwork was never run to.
- A finished basement or a room over the garage that never matches the rest of the house.
- A house heated by a boiler or baseboard, with no ducts for central air at all.
- One room that never keeps up, a home office or a nursery, where its own system beats fighting the main one.

In your house
How a ductless install
goes in your house
Less to it than a ducted system, and less mess.
- The head goes high on the wall, where it can throw air across the room.
- A small hole through the wall carries the refrigerant lines, the drain and the wire to the outdoor unit.
- The outdoor unit sits on a pad or a wall bracket, and one outdoor unit can run several heads.
- Each head is its own zone with its own controls, so a room nobody uses can be set back.
- It heats too. A mini split is a heat pump, so the same head heats in winter.

Paying for it
Rebates, financing and
what to ask before you sign
- Financing, on approved credit. The monthly figures on this page are the plans our estimators use. See yours on the financing page or at the estimate.
- The federal tax credit ended for heat pumps, furnaces and air conditioners installed after 2025, so nobody should be pricing one in.
- Comfort+ membership is $199 a year. The diagnostic visit is included, and half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500. How Comfort+ works.
- Holding someone else’s quote? Our free second opinion: a technician looks at the system you were quoted on and tells you what it actually needs.

customers’ own words
5.0 stars across 1,131 reviews. These three are about mini split installs.
…We needed to have a ductless min-split a/c and heat pump unit installed in a room over our garage. Edis and Rony were the two that came and did the actual install. They were friendly, took the time to show me what they needed to do and offered suggestions for parts of the job that proved to be a little more challenging. They were thorough making sure everything was installed and running well, cleaned up afterward, and walked through how to use the unit before they left.…
SwiftPro' s Install Technician David installed a mini split at my house and did a great job. He took the time to test all connections. Used drop cloths and then made sure everything was cleaned up when he was done. He also gave us some tips on how to ensure good performance from the system. Highly recommend.
SwiftPro was responsive and easy to work with for the mini split installation. The technicians Moises and Oscar were great! Would recommend!

Asked at the estimate
Mini split questions,
answered straight
How much does a ductless mini split cost in Northern Virginia?
One zone runs $7,000 to $10,000 installed, and two to six zones run $11,000 to $30,000, by the number of rooms. The distance to the outdoor unit, the wall or ceiling the heads go on, and the electrical work decide where yours lands. From about $117 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works
How long does a ductless mini split last?
Lennox puts ductless mini splits at 15 to 20 years. Clean filters in the heads and a yearly cleaning keep it there.
Can a mini split heat a room in winter?
Yes. A mini split is a heat pump, so the same head that cools in July heats in January.
How many zones do I need?
One for each room or open area you want to control on its own. A bonus room is one zone; a finished basement with a bedroom and a family room might be two. The estimate counts them with you.
Do mini splits need ducts?
No. The head mounts on the wall and connects to the outdoor unit through a small hole, which is why they fit additions and older houses the ducts never reached.
