Want your own number before anyone comes out? The HVAC estimator prices your house in a few questions.

What moves the price. The size the house needs, worked out from the house and not the old label. The efficiency, and whether the system runs single-stage, two-stage or variable-speed. And what the job finds: a furnace going from a chimney flue to PVC venting, a new line set, work at the electrical panel, or ductwork that needs changes. The HVAC estimator gives your house its own range, and the visit puts your number in writing.

Holding someone else’s quote? Our free second opinion: a technician looks at the system you were quoted on and tells you what it actually needs.

Which system

Gas furnace, heat pump or dual fuel:
which one fits your house

Most Northern Virginia houses heat with gas or with a heat pump, and plenty of them could go either way. More of our installs are heat pumps than any other system, with gas furnace and AC a close second.

SystemHow it heatsFits best whenInstalled
Furnace and ACA gas flame in the furnace; the AC cools in summerThe house has gas and you like the hot air a furnace puts out$8,898 to $23,000
Heat pumpPulls heat out of outdoor air, with electric backup strips for the coldest hoursThe house is all electric, or you want one outdoor unit doing both jobs$8,499 to $21,650
Dual fuelA heat pump for most of the winter; the gas furnace takes over when it gets cold enoughYou have gas and want both: the heat pump on mild days, the furnace for the cold snapsPriced at your house
Ductless mini splitA heat pump that serves one room or zone through a wall headAn addition, a finished basement or a room over the garage the ducts never reached$7,000 to $10,000 a zone

The long reads: our dual fuel guide works out where a heat pump beats gas on Northern Virginia rates, and the HVAC brands guide compares the equipment.

When it’s time

Repair or replace:
the signs it’s time for a new system

Five things that usually mean the money is better spent on new equipment. A technician tells you which apply to yours, and says so when a repair makes more sense.

The system is past 15 years

The Department of Energy plans on about 18 years for a central air conditioner in Virginia’s climate and 21 for a furnace, and ENERGY STAR says to weigh a replacement once an AC or heat pump passes 10.

Past that, a big repair buys time on equipment near the end of its run.

It runs on R-22

R-22 refrigerant hasn’t been made since 2020, so what’s left is scarce and expensive.

On an R-22 system, a refrigerant leak usually ends the repair road.

The repairs keep coming

One part a season adds up, and every repair on old equipment is money that doesn’t carry over to the next system.

With Comfort+, half of each repair bill is banked toward replacing that system, up to $1,500.

Rooms never feel right

Hot upstairs, cold in the basement, a system that runs and runs. Sometimes that’s the ducts or the airflow, not the equipment.

A technician tells you which before anyone prices a new system.

The furnace and AC are the same age

When one half fails and the other is just as old, replacing both at once usually costs less than two separate jobs a few years apart.

A new outdoor unit also has to match the coil inside, so an AC replacement often means a new coil.

How a replacement goes

From the first look
to the system running

Often same-day, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. We run 24/7 emergency service when the heat or the air quits, and a replacement starts the same way a repair does: somebody looks at the house.

  1. 1

    We look at the house

Someone from our HVAC team comes out and measures: the house, the ductwork, the venting, the electrical panel, where the outdoor unit sits.

  2. 2

    Every option, priced

Each option on paper with its installed price and its monthly payment, side by side. If a repair makes more sense, you hear that first.

  3. 3

    Install day

The crew covers the floors and the path in, takes the old equipment out and away, and puts the new system in.

  4. 4

    Started and explained

The system runs while the crew checks it, the thermostat gets set up with you, and two years of our labor is included. Five or ten years is an option.

On install day

How the crew treats
your house

The part of a replacement people remember is the day the crew was in the house.

  • Floors and the path in get covered before the old equipment comes out.
  • Dust stays in the work area. When a job opens a ceiling or a wall, plastic goes up first.
  • The old equipment leaves with us, and the mechanical room is swept before we go.
  • You get walked through it: the thermostat, the filter, and what the new system sounds like when it’s working right.

Asked at the estimate

HVAC replacement questions,
answered straight

How much does it cost to replace an HVAC system in Northern Virginia?

A gas furnace and central air conditioner replaced together run $8,898 to $23,000 installed, and a heat pump system $8,499 to $21,650. Where yours lands depends on the size of the house, the efficiency you pick, and what the job needs, like new venting or a new line set. The HVAC estimator narrows it to your house. From about $148 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works

Should I replace the furnace and AC at the same time?

If they’re about the same age, usually yes. One visit, one install, a matched system, and it costs less than two separate replacements a few years apart. If one half is young, replacing only the old half can make sense, and we’ll price it both ways.

Is a heat pump or a gas furnace better in Northern Virginia?

Both work here. A heat pump heats and cools with one outdoor unit on electricity, with backup strips for the coldest hours. A gas furnace puts out hotter air and pairs with an AC for summer. Dual fuel gives you the heat pump for most of the winter and the furnace for the cold snaps. Our dual fuel guide runs the numbers on Northern Virginia gas and electric rates.

How long does an HVAC system last?

The Department of Energy plans on about 18 years for a central air conditioner in Virginia’s climate, 15 for an air-source heat pump and 21 for a furnace. Trane, Carrier and Lennox put most furnaces at 15 to 20 years. Yearly maintenance stretches it; clogged filters and a system sized wrong shorten it.

Is there a rebate on a new HVAC system?

Washington Gas pays $500 back on a new furnace rated 95.1 to 96.9 percent AFUE and $700 at 97 percent and up, for its Virginia customers, and we’re in its contractor network for furnaces. The federal tax credit ended for anything installed after 2025.

What efficiency does a new system have to meet in Virginia?

Virginia is in the Department of Energy’s Southeast region, where a new split air conditioner has to be at least 14.3 SEER2, or 13.8 SEER2 for the biggest residential sizes. A new heat pump needs 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2.

Can I finance a new HVAC system?

Yes, on approved credit. The monthly figures on this page are the plans the estimator uses, and you can see yours on the financing page or at the estimate.
