What it costs

What a backflow test costs in Aldie.

How many devices you have and what kind they are decide the number, so there isn’t one figure that fits every house. You get one flat price per device when you book, before anyone comes out.

Priced in writing before any work

A device that fails is priced in writing before any work. Most can be rebuilt with new springs, seats or rubber parts; a body cracked by a freeze gets replaced. Either way it’s tested again afterward, which Virginia requires.

The national numbers, and what moves a price up or down, are in our backflow testing cost guide.

What’s different in Aldie

In Aldie, the builder usually got the first backflow test done. The rest are yours.

Half the owner homes in 20105 were built in 2013 or later, and more than nine in ten of all its homes since 2000. In a ZIP that young, the first test on a lot of these devices wasn’t the owner’s to arrange. Loudoun Water puts testing on the owner, but says that on a new house it’s typically the contractor who handles it. That covers the test when the device went in. Every yearly test after it is the owner’s to book.

Which water you’re on decides whether any of this applies. Stone Ridge’s association lists Loudoun Water, and its rules are the ones printed on this page. The old village strung along Route 50 is the exception: Loudoun’s 2019 General Plan says it’s the only rural village in the county served by a private water company, so a backflow question there goes to that company, not to Loudoun Water.

If your irrigation company takes the PVB off before the first freeze, Loudoun Water wants it tested again once it’s back on, so line the test up with the spring start-up rather than waiting on a letter. And if you’re through with the sprinklers, letting the test lapse isn’t the way out. Loudoun Water’s way out is a cut and permanent cap on the system’s supply, and the work has to be done by a plumber or a certified irrigation contractor. That ends the yearly test for good.

Stone Ridge is more than half townhouses, and its association lists six condo communities, Amber Springs, Centre Park, Mercer Park, Stone Mill Corner, Stone Springs and Summerwalk, each run by its own management company. A building’s fire line device is usually the association’s to test, so a notice covering the whole building belongs with that manager. Loudoun County backflow testing covers the rest of how Loudoun Water’s program works.

When it’s time

When a backflow preventer in Aldie needs a tester.

Fire sprinklers inside the house

Loudoun Water notes that some developers offer a home fire sprinkler system as an option. If yours has one, the pipe that feeds it carries a backflow device of its own, usually near where the water line enters the house, and it’s due a test every year just like the lawn’s. Count both when you book.

The sprinklers came with the house

In a newer subdivision the builder often put in the lawn sprinklers, and the backflow device with them. Nobody tells the next owner it needs a test every year until the first notice shows up.

A pool, a hot tub or a big yard

Anything piped to the water supply that could push water back into it gets a device: lawn sprinklers, a pool fill line, a hot tub. More yard usually means more of them.

Before the first hard freeze

Before it freezes in Aldie, drain the backflow preventer.

A device that sits full of water all winter is the most common reason it fails the spring test. Around here, get this done by the end of October.

  1. 1

    Find the device

On most houses it’s outside by the foundation: a brass valve on two pipes standing out of the ground, with a cap on top. That’s a PVB. An RPZ or double check may sit in a basement or a box in the ground instead.

  2. 2

    Shut the sprinkler supply

Turn off the valve that feeds the sprinklers, usually in the basement or utility room just past the main shutoff. Leave the rest of the house on.

  3. 3

    Get the water out

Most systems here get blown out with compressed air so nothing sits in the lines or the device. If yours hasn’t been, that’s the step that matters.

  4. 4

    Leave the valves halfway

Set the device’s two shutoff handles and its little test cocks about halfway, near 45 degrees, so no pocket of water stays trapped inside to freeze.

  5. 5

Cover it, but not the relief port

An insulated cover helps a PVB through the winter. On an RPZ, never block the relief valve opening underneath: it has to be able to dump water.

  6. 6

    Taking it off? Ask first

Some owners bring the device inside for the winter. Check the rules first: Loudoun Water wants a device that came off tested again when it goes back on, and Fairfax County wants it back on before your testing month.

Not sure it was drained, or saw water coming from the cap when the sprinklers ran? Call us. We’ll look at it, and if it cracked, you get the reason and a price before anything gets replaced.

Who sends the notice

Who sends the backflow test notice in Aldie.

Loudoun County

Loudoun Water wants testable backflow devices tested every year by a certified tester. A device that fails has 30 days from Loudoun Water’s notice to be repaired and retested, and one taken off for the winter is retested when it goes back on. Source.

Choosing a tester

How to pick who tests your backflow preventer in Aldie.

Questions to ask anybody who offers to test it, us included.

  1. Can they replace a device that won’t rebuild?

Ask before the test, not after. When a failed device has to be replaced outright, Loudoun Water wants the new one installed by a master plumber, and its 30 days keep running while you look for one. Find out up front whether the same visit can include the replacement.

  2. Will the test count with your utility?

Since January 1, 2023, Virginia only accepts tests from a DPOR-certified Backflow Prevention Device Worker, and some places keep a list of their own on top. Ask to see the certificate before the gauge goes on.

  3. Who sends the report?

Some utilities take it from the tester and some want it from you. Ask which, and keep a copy either way, so you can show the date if a second notice turns up.

  4. What happens if it fails?

Ask for the reason and a written price before anything gets taken apart, and whether the retest is part of it. A failed device runs on a deadline, so a tester who can also fix it saves you a second trip.

Questions

Backflow questions from Aldie.

Who sends my Aldie backflow test results to Loudoun Water?

The tester. Loudoun Water has certified testers report on paper or through its online test report, which sends a copy to your email and the utility’s the moment it’s submitted. File that email with the house papers; it’s the same record Loudoun Water holds.

Does an Aldie house on a well need a backflow test?

No water utility will ask for one. Past the village, Loudoun Water says most rural properties run on their own wells, and with no utility on the line, no test notice comes. The device on the sprinkler line still earns its keep, though: it keeps yard water out of the water you drink.

How much does a backflow test cost in Aldie?

One flat price per device, given when you book, before anyone comes out. How many devices you have, and whether one needs a repair, is what moves it. Our cost guide has the national numbers.

How long does a backflow test take?

About 30 minutes a device. The water is off for a few of those minutes while the gauge readings are taken.
