Ejector pump trouble

What the ejector pump
is trying to tell you

A sewage ejector pump sits in a sealed basin under a basement bathroom or laundry, below the level of the sewer line, and lifts everything up to it. These are the calls we get about them, and what they usually turn out to be.

The alarm is going off

The water in the basin rose past where the pump should have kicked on: the pump stopped, the float is stuck, or more is coming in than it can move.

Stop using the basement fixtures, check the pump’s breaker and any GFCI outlet it plugs into, then call. Silencing the alarm doesn’t lower the water.

A sewage smell in the basement

The basin lid or its vent isn’t sealing, or a floor drain nobody uses has dried out and lets sewer gas through.

Pour a bucket of water down the floor drains. If the smell stays, the basin seal or the vent needs a look.

The pump runs and runs

A check valve letting water fall back into the basin, a float stuck up, or a worn pump that can’t lift what it used to.

A pump that never rests burns itself out. Call before it quits.

It hums, but nothing moves

The motor has power but the impeller is jammed, often with wipes, or the pump has failed.

Turn it off at the breaker so it doesn’t burn out, stop using the fixtures, and call.

Backing up into the basement shower or floor drain

The basin is full and has nowhere to go: the pump, the check valve or the line it pumps into.

Stop running water downstairs. This one gets worse every time someone flushes.

A storm or an outage knocked it out

An ejector pump runs on house power, so when the power goes out it stops, and the basin keeps filling with whatever drains into it.

Hold off on basement showers, laundry and flushing until the power’s back. If the alarm keeps going after that, or the pump shorted in the storm, call.

Ejector or sump pump?

Ejector pump vs sump pump:
two different jobs

They look alike in a basement and get mixed up on the phone all the time.

Plumbing diagnosis visit

$49

A plumber opens the basin and finds whether it’s the pump, the float, the check valve or the line, and prices the fix. $250 after hours.

New basin, or a grinder pump

Priced at your house

A cracked basin, one that’s too small, or a grinder pump pushing up a long run is a bigger job, so a plumber looks first.

Monthly figures: 60mo @ 0% APR on each starting price, the whole price financed, on approved credit. Longer plans lower the payment and cost more in total. The lender sets the final terms. How financing works

Repairs: a stuck float, a failed check valve or a clog in the pump is priced at the visit once the plumber has the lid off. When the pump itself is worn out, a new one usually beats paying to repair it.

Storms and outages

When a storm takes out
the ejector pump

Storms are when ejector pumps get noticed: the power flickers, a pump shorts, and the basement shower fills back up.

  • No power, no pump. An ejector pump only runs on house power. In an outage, don’t use anything that drains to the basement.
  • When the power comes back, listen for the pump to run and the alarm to stop. If the breaker trips again, leave it off and call.
  • Water coming in from outside in a storm is the sump pump’s job, not the ejector’s. If you have both, it’s worth knowing which basin is which.
  • We run 24/7 emergency service for a basement that’s backing up.

Asked on the phone

Ejector pump questions,
answered straight

How much does it cost to replace a sewage ejector pump?

Our sewage ejector pump replacements run $2,350 to $2,750 installed, in the basin you have, with a new check valve and the lid sealed back down. A new basin or a grinder pump is a bigger job and is priced at the house. From about $39 a month at 0% APR for 60 months, the whole price financed, on approved credit. How financing works

What’s the difference between an ejector pump and a sump pump?

An ejector pump lifts sewage and wastewater from a basement bathroom or laundry up to the sewer line, out of a sealed basin. A sump pump moves groundwater out of a pit and away from the house.

Why is my ejector pump alarm going off?

The water in the basin is higher than it should be: the pump stopped, the float stuck, or more is draining in than it can move. Stop using the basement fixtures, check its breaker, and call.

Can I use the basement bathroom when the power is out?

Not anything that drains to the ejector pump. It runs on house power, so in an outage the basin fills and has nowhere to go.

Is an ejector pump the same as a grinder pump?

No. An ejector pump moves wastewater and solids as they are. A grinder pump chops them up first so it can push them farther or uphill through a smaller pipe. A basement bathroom usually has an ejector pump.

Do you repair ejector pumps or only replace them?

Both. A stuck float, a bad check valve or a clog in the pump is a repair, priced at the visit once the lid is off. A pump that’s worn out gets replaced.

What brand of ejector pump do you install?

Zoeller, with a quiet check valve on the line out of the basin.
