Gas Plumber in Northern Virginia

A plumbing diagnosis visit is $49, or $250 after hours, and most gas line repairs and cap-offs run $250 to $500. A gas range or dryer hookup is $400 to $500, and a new gas line is priced at your house, in writing, before anyone cuts pipe.

Smell gas right now? Get everyone out, then call 911 or Washington Gas at 844-927-4427 from outside. Don’t flip a switch on the way. Call us once the utility has made it safe.

After the gas company leaves

The gas company shut it off.
Here’s what happens next

When Washington Gas or Columbia Gas finds a leak on your side of the meter, it turns the gas off, tags it and goes. It owns the pipe up to and including the meter. Everything after it, the black iron or yellow flexible pipe running to the furnace, water heater, range and dryer, belongs to the house, and fixing it is a licensed plumber’s job.

  • Most leaks are at a joint, not mid-pipe. Dried-out thread sealant on a 30-year-old fitting, a flexible connector behind a range that’s been pulled out a dozen times, a shutoff valve that never quite sealed, a line someone capped with tape.
  • We find it with a gas detector and soap solution on every joint, fix it, and test it again before the gas goes back on.
  • You get the price before the fix. A leak at one fitting or connector is the low end. Replacing a longer section of pipe costs more, and you see that number first.
  • The long read: gas line repair in Northern Virginia, who owns which pipe, and what the code says about testing.

Plumbing diagnosis visit

$49

A plumber at the house to find the leak or check the run, and price the fix. $250 after hours.

Gas line repair or cap-off

$250 to $500

A leak at a fitting, valve or flexible connector fixed and tested, or a line nobody uses capped properly. A longer section of pipe costs more.

Gas range, cooktop or dryer hookup

$400 to $500

Your new gas appliance connected to the gas line already there, and every joint leak tested.

New gas line, or one moved

Priced at your house

For a range, dryer, grill or fireplace where there’s no line yet. The price is the distance and the walls in between, so a plumber looks first, and a new line needs a permit.

Going tankless? A tankless water heater burns gas several times faster than a tank, and the line that fed the old tank often can’t keep up. Sizing the gas line is part of our tankless installs: water heater prices.

Gas furnace acting up? That’s our heating team: heating repair.

When to call

Signs you need a gas plumber,
and when to call 911 first

Six things people describe on the phone. The first two are get-out-of-the-house calls.

A rotten egg smell that hangs around

Gas companies add that smell so you notice a leak. A faint whiff as a burner lights is normal. A smell that lingers, or one in the basement or utility room, is not.

Strong? Get out and call from outside. Faint and on and off? Call us and we’ll test the joints.

Hissing at a gas pipe, valve or the meter

A hiss near gas piping is gas going where it shouldn’t.

Leave and call 911 or Washington Gas at 844-927-4427 from outside. Don’t try to tighten anything.

The gas company shut it off and tagged it

Washington Gas or Columbia Gas found a leak or an unsafe connection on your side of the meter, shut the gas off and tagged the appliance or the line. A lot of our gas calls start right here.

Tell us what the tag says. We find the leak, fix it and test it so the gas can go back on.

An old capped line nobody can explain

A stub left behind from a gas dryer or an old furnace is fine if it was capped properly. A plug and pipe dope from a junk drawer is not.

Have it looked at. If nothing needs that line, we cap it the right way or take it out.

Yellow flexible gas pipe with no copper wire on it

The yellow corrugated stainless steel tubing in a lot of homes built or redone since the late 1990s has to be bonded to the house’s grounding with a heavy copper wire. Older installs often skipped it.

Can’t find a bare copper wire clamped to it near the meter? Ask us to check it on any visit.

You’re switching to a gas range, dryer or grill

A new gas appliance needs a line sized for everything already on the system, not just itself.

We look at the whole run, price it at the house and handle the permit when the job needs one.

How the call goes

Four steps, and you
approve the third one

Often same-day, and we will tell you honestly when we can get there. We run 24/7 emergency service.

  1. 1

You call, we tell you when

A person answers, day or night, and gives you a real arrival window and a call when the plumber is on the way.

  2. 2

    Diagnosis, $49

The plumber checks the run with a gas detector and soap solution on every joint, finds the leak and prices the fix.

  3. 3

    The price, in writing

Before anything is cut, opened up or ordered. Approve it or don’t, and nobody makes a no awkward.

  4. 4

    Fixed and tested

The repair, then the same test again, so you know it holds before the gas goes back to work.

I smelled gas in my house and urgently needed someone to come out and assess the situation. … Edis located a gas leak within 5 mins of arrival. Edis walked me through the issues that need to be addressed with my system and repairs needed.…

In the middle of one of the coldest weeks this winter, a small gas leak one evening resulted in immediate shut off … Our technician Tyson came out the following day. … Tyson did just that so we could restore heating and avoid another cold evening…

Samantha Albanese, Google review

…technician who did the installation of our new gas dryer was professional, did a good job and left no mess. They were on time & took away the old dryer (for a fee). Home Depot would have done it (for a fee) but Home Depot didn't realize that a gas technician needed to be there to disconnect the gas line.

Asked on the phone

Gas plumbing questions,
answered straight

How much does a gas plumber cost in Northern Virginia?

A plumbing diagnosis visit is $49, or $250 after hours. Most gas line repairs and cap-offs run $250 to $500, a gas range or dryer hookup $400 to $500, and a new gas line is priced at the house, because its price is the distance and the walls in between.

Who fixes a gas leak, the gas company or a plumber?

The gas company owns the pipe up to and including the meter, and fixes leaks there. Everything after the meter belongs to the homeowner, so on your side the utility shuts the gas off and a licensed plumber makes the repair.

Can a plumber hook up a gas stove or dryer?

Yes. We connect new gas ranges, cooktops and dryers to the gas line already there for $400 to $500, and run a new line where there isn’t one. A new line is priced at the house and needs a permit.

Is a gas leak an emergency?

If you smell it strongly or hear it hiss, yes: get out and call 911 or Washington Gas at 844-927-4427 from outside. A faint smell that comes and goes still needs a look soon. We run 24/7 emergency service for the repair once the utility has made it safe.

Do you work on propane lines too?

Yes. Propane lines and appliances, the same as natural gas.

Do I need a permit for gas line work?

A new gas line, or one that’s moved or extended, is permitted and inspected work in Virginia. We pull the permit on the jobs that need one, and it’s on the written price.

How do plumbers find a gas leak?

With a gas detector along the run and soap solution on every joint, which bubbles where gas is getting out. Most leaks turn out to be at a fitting, a valve or a flexible connector, not in the middle of a pipe.
