What a new AC costs in Bristow.

The same price book our estimator runs on, for a central air conditioner on its own, keeping the furnace you have. A single-stage unit on a small house sits near the bottom; a variable-speed one on a big house, near the top.

The HVAC replacement cost estimator narrows it to your house. Then a tech measures, and you get the installed price in writing before anything is ordered.

What’s different in Bristow

Bristow kept building right through the R-22 switch, so read your plate first.

Most of Bristow went up in one long run: in 20136, 5,558 of the 9,619 homes the Census sorts by decade were finished from 2000 through 2009. That run crossed the refrigerant change. A condenser built before 2010 most likely holds R-22; one from the last years of the boom, or anything newer, most likely R-410A. So next-door neighbors can need different answers, and the plate on your outdoor unit, naming its year and refrigerant, is what we read first.

R-22 hasn’t been made since 2020, so a refill on an older unit comes out of reclaimed stock at that summer’s market price, poured into a machine near the end of its expected life. The replacement runs an A2L refrigerant, so the furnace-top coil gets swapped along with the condenser. An R-410A unit from the 2010s is still serviced, so the $99 diagnostic visit prices that repair first.

Bristow is AC-only country. Gas heats close to nine in ten Linton Hall owner homes, and a good share of the build-out furnaces have been swapped already, many for high-efficiency models venting through plastic pipe in a side wall. If yours is one, and the condenser outside is still the 2000s original, you don’t need a whole system: the new AC and its coil go on the younger furnace. Two originals? Then get a quote for both halves, $8,898 to $23,000, to weigh against it.

About three in ten Bristow homes are townhouses, 609 of them in Victory Lakes alone, and behind a garage townhouse the outdoor unit often lives under the deck or in a strip of yard between neighbors. To the county, the same type on the same spot is a repair, no permit. Move it and the county is back in the picture, and in Victory Lakes the Covenants Committee reviews changes to the outside of the house first.

By the numbers

Bristow houses, by the numbers

From the Census Bureau’s 2020 to 2024 survey, owner-occupied homes unless it says otherwise.

Bristow

  • Median home built2004 Census
  • Built before 1980hardly any Census
  • Built since 2000about 8 in 10 Census
  • Most homes aresingle-family houses, about 6 in 10 Census
  • Heated withgas, about 9 in 10 Census
  • Rentedabout 1 in 10 Census
  • Townhouse condensers sit in tight side yards and on decks, so the new one has to fit the same pad and the same clearances.
  • A lot of air conditioners here are the builder’s originals, coming up on twenty years.

When it’s time

When a new air conditioner makes sense in Bristow.

The furnace is younger than the condenser

Read the plate inside the furnace door, then the one on the outdoor unit. In plenty of Bristow houses the furnace got replaced in the last decade while the condenser is still the builder’s, stamped around 2004. That’s the house an AC-only job was made for.

It still runs on R-22

An air conditioner put in before 2010 most likely holds R-22, which hasn’t been made since 2020. A leak on one of those usually ends the repair road.

It’s still the builder’s AC

A house from the 2000s often cools with the condenser it was built with. Past fifteen years, compressors and fan motors start to go, one after another.

Permits, locally

Who signs off on a new air conditioner in Bristow.

Prince William County

Prince William County lists any work that alters a home’s heating and air conditioning as permit work, but swapping an electric furnace, heat pump or air conditioning condensing unit for the same type of unit in the same spot is an ordinary repair that needs no permit. Source.

Choosing who installs it

How to pick the best AC replacement company in Bristow.

Questions to ask anybody who quotes you, us included.

  1. Do they check what your furnace blower can handle before they pick a unit?

The new coil moves its air with your furnace’s blower. A furnace replaced in the 2010s may run a two-stage AC well; a builder original is often matched best by a single-stage one. Ask them to read the furnace’s model number before they quote.

  2. Did they size it to your house?

Ask how they picked the size. Copying the old nameplate repeats whatever was guessed when the house was built.

  3. Is the coil inside part of the price?

The outdoor unit and the coil on the furnace are rated as a pair. Ask whether the quote replaces both, and what happens to the line set.

  4. Will they tell you if it’s worth fixing?

A good company puts the repair price next to the replacement range and lets you choose. Already holding somebody’s big number? Take the free second opinion first.

Questions

AC replacement questions from Bristow.

Does Prince William County want a permit for a new AC in Bristow?

Not when the new outdoor unit is the same type on the same spot; the county lists that as an ordinary repair. A condenser on a new pad, or an AC traded for a heat pump, isn’t that swap, and in Victory Lakes a new pad is an exterior change too.

My Bristow house is from the 2010s. Is the AC due?

Probably not on age alone. The 1,690 homes finished in 20136 from 2010 on came with R-410A or a newer refrigerant, still serviceable, so a leak or a failed part is a repair question first. The diagnostic visit is $99, with the repair price set beside the replacement range.

How much does a new AC cost in Bristow?

$5,942 to $14,450 installed for a central air conditioner on its own, keeping the furnace you have; size and efficiency set where yours lands. An AC and furnace together run $8,898 to $23,000. The HVAC replacement cost estimator gives your house its own number.

Should I put in a heat pump instead?

It’s worth pricing. A heat pump cools exactly like an AC and also heats on mild days, so with your gas furnace it becomes dual fuel. A heat pump system runs $8,499 to $21,650 installed, and we’ll price it both ways.

Ready when you are

The range first, then your number.

Call, or send the form at the top. A tech measures the house and puts the installed price in writing before anything is ordered, and if the old AC is worth fixing, you’ll hear that first.
